Fort Worth Star-Telegram Gives Away Free Bibles
“A story by the Associated Press says the International Bible Society-Send the Light wants to deliver custom-designed Bibles to newspaper subscribers around the U.S. as part of an effort to find innovative ways to spread a Christian message. But not everyone thinks it’s a good idea. The ministry would spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to distribute New Testaments with 11 newspapers during 2007 and 2008, packaging them in pouches on the outside of newspapers, much like sample products.”

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is one of the newspapers that is participating in this Bible giveaway program.
I would be outraged if I picked up my newspaper and found a New Testament attached to it. When a newspaper aligns itself with any religious point of view, it undermines its credibility.
Imagine if your hometown newspaper participated in a program to distribute free copies of the Koran; wouldn’t you be shocked and outraged? If one of their editorials claimed that the war on terrorism was a farce, wouldn’t you think: Of course they’re soft on Islamic terrorism, they love Islam so much they gave away free copies of the Koran!
Christians should be the most troubled by this ridiculous idea; the Bible or any other great work of literature should not be tossed on front porches and gutters like so much garbage.
The Bible should only be given to those with a desire to read it. I want everyone to read my online essays, but I wouldn’t want my editorials to pop up like one of those annoying ads everytime someone clicked the front page of one of the Web sites I write for.
Most Americans already have at least one copy of the Bible; packaging them in pouches and giving them away free with newspapers is a tremendous waste of paper.
Newspapers are losing thousands of customers every day to the Internet; they don’t need to participate in stupid ideas that will alienate their precious subscribers.
I write a weekly column for a small town newspaper in Virginia, and I also write for several Web sites. Please leave a comment or send me an email at: rreyes4966@aol.com | More from Robert Paul Reyes
