“Great Baseball Plays” is a semi-regular weekend feature on my blog, and no collection of great plays would be complete without some vintage Ozzie Smith. Ozzie, perhaps the greatest fielding shortstop of all time, is pictured above, turning a double play in the 1982 World Series.

Yes…getting to watch Ozzie here in St. Louis year after year…was one of those little things in life you take for granted…but know deep inside is only one of a kind.

And yet, the position of shortstop and second base is very much like a dance team. Without Tommy Herr, who always knew exactly how to catch Ozzie’s sometimes off throws…Ozzie would not have gotten the stats that he did…While Ozzie was dazzling everyone, Tommy, the quiet guy, got not much fanfair.

And yet, after watching the two for hundreds of games, not until later, did I realize just how much Ozzie needed Tommie…more than he will ever get credit for. Tommie was indispensible to Ozzie’s act. Indispensible.

Ozzie was great…but he needed a good team to show off his talents.

    Hey, thanks for the memories.

Right.

Man up.
