Baseball: Bonds Sets New Home Run Record

San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds may have set the new Major League Baseball home run record, but that did not help his team win Tuesday night’s game. The Washington Nationals came back to defeat the Giants 8-6.

The Atlanta Braves beat the Mets 7-3, moving to within 3.5 games of the New York franchise in the battle to lead the National League East division.

In the American League, the Los Angeles Angels stumped Boston 10-4. The Red Sox had taken a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning but the Angels responded with five runs in their half-inning and never looked back.

Other American League winners were the Yankees, Tigers, Mariners, Indians, Royals and Rangers.

National League victors included the Phillies, Reds, Astros, Padres, Rockies and Pirates.

The Philadelphia Phillies trounced Florida 11-1. The one Marlin run came on a homer by Hanley Ramirez on the first pitch of the game. The Cincinnati Reds shutout the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0. The Astros handed the Chicago Cubs their third straight loss with a 5-2 win in Houston.

The San Diego Padres got their major league-leading 16th shutout of the season with a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Colorado Rockies drubbed the Milwaukee Brewers 11-4, and the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3.

In the American League, Yankees starter Roger Clemens threw six shutout innings before being thrown out of the game for hitting a batter with a pitch. New York still beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-2. The Detroit Tigers downed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9-6, while the Seattle Mariners cruised past the Baltimore Orioles 10-3.

The Cleveland Indians edged the Chicago White Sox 2-1, helped by pitcher Jake Westbrook who retired 23 of 24 batters at one stretch. The Kansas City Royals overcame the Minnesota Twins 5-1 and the Texas Rangers defeated the Oakland Athletics 8-6.
