“The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is an American civil rights organization. It played a prominent role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. SCLC was closely associated with its first president, Martin Luther King, Jr.”
Quote from Wikipedia.
Michael Vick would not have the most lucrative contract in the NFL if it weren’t for the groundbreaking work of the SCLC. But the glory days of the SCLC are in the past; this seminal human rights group doesn’t have any recent accomplishments. The SCLC, like most major African American civil rights organizations, is composed not of humble, dedicated and tireless civil rights warriors like Martin Luther King, but by middle class bureaucrats who are only interested in retiring with a fat pension.
To keep in the news and maintain a semblance of relevancy the SCLC periodically engages in publicity stunts.
“Last week, SCLC President Charles Steele told AJC reporters that the civil rights organization would honor and recognize the embattled Falcons quarterback who is under federal indictment on dogfighting charges.
‘We need to support him no matter what the evidence reveals,’ Steele said before the convention began, adding that his organization was focusing on Vick’s redemption.
Quote from AJC.Com
Why on earth were they going to honor Vick? For finding an innovative way to sneak marijuana onboard a plane? For showing his respect for his fans by giving them the finger? For infecting only one female with an STD? For his prowess at killing and torturing dogs?
The evidence is overwhelming that Vick was the ringleader of a dogfighting club, but the SCLC doesn’t care what the evidence reveals. They are not interested in justice, they care only about defending Vick simply because he is black. If the Antichrist were black and he was wreaking havoc all over the world, the SCLS would jump to his defense. “Don’t be so quick to condemn a brother, he deserves all the respect accorded to Jesus Christ.”
Vick isn’t a poor oppressed black man; he is an incredibly wealthy thug we can afford a “dream team” to represent him. Certainly the SCLC can take up the cause of a black person who has truly suffered discrimination.
The SCLC has come to its senses, and it now claims that they never intended to honor Vick.
Most of the donations that the SCLC receives comes from non-blacks, they need to stop alienating mainstream America. The SCLC might gain some street cred by supporting Vick, but they risk offending most Americans.
