Officials with the U.S. Republican Party say embattled Senator Larry Craig of Idaho will announce his resignation Saturday in the aftermath of his arrest in an undercover sex sting.
Republican officials say Craig will make his announcement in the capital city of Boise, and that his resignation will take effect September 30.
The veteran lawmaker has been under fire since the newspaper Roll Call reported Monday that he had been arrested in June at an airport in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He pleaded guilty after an undercover police officer charged him with soliciting sex in a men’s restroom.
Craig insisted earlier this week that he was not gay, and said he pleaded guilty to make the charge “go away.” But Senate Republicans have strongly denounced Craig and demanded his resignation.
Craig was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Idaho in 1980. He served four terms in the House before his election to the Senate in 1990. He is a strong conservative who has spoken out against gay rights, including same-sex marriage.
Craig was up for re-election in 2008.
