I was just thinking that the closest parallel to Iraq wasn't Vietnam but rather... the United States! Namely, the civil war.

Lincoln fought a war partially for noble democratic ideals (sound familiar) to free the slaves but did so by conscripting (forced labor) recent Irish immigrants for a cause that was tied up with preserving "Manifest destiny" (sound familar? Blood for oil?)

End of the civl war. "Mission accomplished?" 100 years of civil rights problems and continued ethnic and racial strife today show otherwise. Yet, Lincoln has one of the largest and popular presidential memorials on the DC Mall.

One thing should be clear: We're in this for the long haul. A withdrawal from Iraq would be a show of weakness that would rumble from the streets of North Paris to London to Amsterdam. Low "blue stater" birthrates (or the birthrates of liberal non-religious westerners) have caused a demographic vacuum that Islamic followers quietly moved into during the past 2 decades. History may show that Iraq exposed the follow of leftist political correctness and cultural self-destruction.

I had thought from Clinton's first year on Nixon was glad to see him so someone else would be at the bottom. At the very least Bush would be forth from the bottom. History will write him much higher I'm sure. And Clinton will be at the bottom with possibly his wife beside him. Scary thought is it not?

If that is the case, the only two names that will that keep him from being dead last are Clinton and Carter.
