John Hamel, LCSW–The Three Common Myths of Domestic Violence

2007-09-13
By

John Hamel, LCSW, a court-certified batterer treatment provider and author of the book Gender-Inclusive Treatment of Intimate Partner Abuse, has just come out with The Context of Intimate Partner Violence: Three Common Myths–An Annotated Bibliography. In it, Hamel identifies three common myths about Intimate Partner/Domestic Violence:

MYTH #1:  Mutual abuse is a rare phenomenon.  Even if men and women assault each other at comparable rates, men are typically the initiators and the dominant partners.

THE FACTS:  Most Intimate Partner Violence is mutual.  Women initiate somewhat more often than men.

MYTH #2:   Men use violence intentionally to control their partners, whereas women use violence in self-defense, or as a way to express frustration or to communicate.

THE FACTS:  Self-defense is an equally unlikely motive for both genders. Male and female perpetrators are motivated to abuse their partners for various reasons, including a desire to retaliate or to communicate feelings, and there is no convincing evidence that men are significantly more motivated to control.

MYTH #3:  Only men are controlling and engage in the combination of repeat emotional and physical abuse known as “battering” or “intimate terrorism.”

THE FACTS:  Although women are far more often the victims of sexual coercion, they are just as likely as men to be the perpetrators of most psychological abuse and controlling behaviors, and this includes stalking when broadly defined.

Hamel helped found the National Family Violence Legislative Resource Center and works with Michael Robinson and the California Alliance for Families and Children to reform California’s domestic violence policies. The pair are sponsoring the ground-breaking conference “From Ideology to Inclusion” early next year.

Families Against Confiscatory Child Support (FACCS)
FACCS is the national voice for fair and reasonable child support. FACCS believes all parents have an obligation to support their children financially.  However, in high income cases, state and federal laws often result in excessive awards that are effectively alimony in disguise and have little to do with supporting children. Huge child support awards lead to protracted custody disputes, undermines co-parenting, and leaves children worse off financially.www.faccsonline.org / contact@faccsonline.org

There may be a fourth myth: ‘More women are killed by domestic violence than men.’ In the UK, the government stats state two women a week are killed by dv, whilst one man a week is killed. When, however, you include people who are driven to suicide by domestic violence, a different picture emerges. In Utah, in 2005, 42 of the 44 domestic violence-related suicides were male (according to a post on mensactivism).

I got a member of the British House of Lords, Lord Campbell Savours, to ask whether the UK government collects statistics on domestic violence-related suicide by gender – The UK does not, currently (I wonder why!)

Put pressure on YOUR administration to collect dv suicide stats by gender, and help put domestic violence myth No 4 out of its misery!

Good for Hamal in stating the facts clearly. It is high time that the myths were publicly exposed.

As for the Judges: They have proven time and time again that the truth is NOT what they want to hear. They are content with listening to inflated lies from the lawyers who are plundering the families and awarding treasure and children to female liars so they can take their cut of the man’s wealth, even if it is meagre. They sit on their benches wrapped in robes and the warm glow of faux-chivalry, and happily suspend all cognition while repeating worn out mantras fed to them by the femonazis that put them there.

The book needs a paper dust jacket. The Judges need a full metal one.

Feminist government official (enforcement branch) asks men for help to guard streets.

I month later the same police will imprison the men for arguing with his wife/girlfriend, enforcing VAWA. Also the same police will not enforce a visitation order, so the men can see their kids.

Where is the government when men need them?

The whole concept of verbal abuse is absurd, yet I hear sympathetic men and women crying about their friends and family members divorcing men because he was verbally abusive.
That means he was not just agreeing with whatever she said.

Yes, but who in Congress or any state legislature or any judge or D.A. cares more about facts than PC feminist myths, stereotypes, and anti-male propaganda? Based on the last VAWA vote, I’d say nobody.

Seems to me there ought to be a law against passing laws based on falsehoods provided by special interest groups, PC or not, or at a minimum the legislators should be humiliated and impeached for basing legislation on lies when the truth is out there.

Right.
