Women’s Quest’s ‘Bicycles for Women’

By Glenn Sacks

The other day my nine-year-old daughter and I took our bikes to the bike shop because, under my brilliant leadership, we had gone onto an off-road trail that left three of our four tires flat. Thorns, apparently.

Anyway, while waiting for our bikes to be repaired, we saw a large advertising poster for a company which specializes in “Bicycles for Women.” I called my daughter over and told her, “Look at this–maybe this would be a good bicycle for mommy.”

We read the sales pitch from former triathlete Colleen Cannon, founder of Women’s Quest. I thought it would be an intelligent explanation of why their bikes were more comfortable for women than other companies’ bikes. Instead, Cannon explained, “Meet the antidote to testosterone poisoning.”

So typical–sexist and belittling to men, and another example of how so many supposedly strong, independent women can’t work on their own project for 10 minutes without having to put men down in order to praise or promote it.

Colleen Cannon undoubtedly prefers to spend her evenings with cats…. or perhaps other women wearing strap-ons, but on a positive note she doesn’t have to worry about “testosterone poisoning” in those cases.

A quick trip to the Women’s Quest website reveals a list of “See anything here that you love to do or would love to try? Click the activity to learn more.” I didn’t find “man-hating”. Perhaps this is something she introduces you too after you sign up and pay your money. Probably smart to not list it as an activity at her retreat, it might cut down her demographic a little.

Maybe Colleen Cannon prefers a vastly superior abusive lesbian relationship where the abuse level has reached 60%, suicide rate is much higher and diseases run rampant including breast cancer, murder and suicides…

I would prefer it is she did..

    I am curious Glenn,

How did you address this with your daughter?

I was curious enough to check out just what made these bikes female-specific. With the helpful links from Team Estrogen (the search was worth it for that name alone) the differences seem to come down to a funny-looking seat, one that would be uncomfortable for anyone, but marginally less so for a woman. Well, that and the rather twee colors the bikes come in. I suppose anyone looking to spend $1k+ on a bike might consider such things. My apologies for not keeping up the tone of moral dudgeon of the previous posters, but I thought that this aspect was (slightly) interesting.

Palinurus, you are excused from keeping a tone of moral dudgeon (although in my case it’s more a tone of bemused contempt for a woman who feels the need to market her products by attempting to invoke a sense of female supremacy…..).

Besides, it’s always a pleasure to know that there are bicycle seat experts out there, in case one has the need for emergency information on that topic.
