Native American Reader Fires Back at Immigrant Bashers

2007-11-30
By

Recently hero father Manuel Jesus Cordova Soberanes gave up his attempt to come to the United States and instead turned himself over to the Border Patrol, all to save the life of a injured nine-year-old American boy.

Cordova found the boy wandering in the Arizona desert after the boy’s mother was killed in a car crash on Thanksgiving Day. Cordova, who was promptly deported, was a noble good Samaritan–to learn more, see my recent blog post Illegal Immigrant Hero Father Deserves Medal and Visa, not Deportation.

The Mexican consulate in Nogales is trying to obtain a short-term visa for Cordova so he can come to Arizona and be recognized for his actions. I suggested instead that the US government should send him a legal permanent Visa and invite this hero to come to the US. I noted, “The next time you hear some immigrant-basher refer to ‘those f***ing Mexicans,’ think of Manuel Jesus Cordova Soberanes.”

(I do understand and respect critics of immigration who say “yes, we can understand why people from poorer countries would want to come here for a better life, and we sympathize, but we do need to do something to control immigration”.)

Most readers were very supportive of Manuel Jesus Cordova Soberanes, but any discussion of immigration invariably brings forward a few racists, and this was no exception. One commenter wrote:

“Who’s to say the crash most likely happened when the poor woman lost control trying to avoid one of these criminal vermin, resulting in her death? Look, it’ nice that he stayed and did the right thing while the other cowards took off and fled but he is an illegal thief breaking the law and needs deportation. I say we don’t bust his head in with a baseball bat like we should to the rest of them as we kick their worthless asses out.”

Kelly, a Native American long-time reader of mine, wrote back a scathing remark which merits a post:

“Wow, these comments make me proud to be an American sometimes, sort of. I am a Native American. Let me tell you what I think of you pathetic immigrant bashers. You and your families have no right to be here. You are the descendents of liars, thieves, and genocidal murderers. Your ancestors have no honor. We gave you help, food and shelter when you needed it, and guided Lewis and Clark across the continent. In return, you broke every promise you ever made, shot us in back whenever you could, cut down the forests, killed the wildlife, and stole everything that was not nailed down.

“Laws, treaties, boundaries, borders, and promises meant nothing to you if you thought that, as a white man, you deserved to have it. Gold on our sovereign land, here comes the white man! Shortcut to the West, we don’t need to pay any damn Indians no damn toll fees. There is very little moral difference between your ancestors’ actions and some gang member who is helping himself to your grandma’s wallet. A squatter is a squatter. So I tell you squatters to get off your high horse. Unlike your ancestors, Mr. Soberanes didn’t murder anyone while he was here.”

As a native american myself, after all, I was born here on this continent, I sure do get tired of perenially being accused of racism for calling illegal aliens what they are…illegal.

As far as being decendants of liars, thieves, and genocidal murderers, Kelly the American Indian need only look as far as her own family tree to find some. Moreover, her claim of indigenousness is a bit suspect, as her relatives migrated here to this continent same as everyone else. In fact, there are some indications that her ancestors also committed genocide by pushing out the previous inhabitants. I doubt they were treated with mercy and accomodation either.

So her attempt to claim the moral high ground in this debate is spurious. Her ancestors robbed, killed, scalped, and took slaves way before Europeans got here.

So, pot, this is kettle calling. Get off your high horse. And knock off all of this group guilt crap. My ancestors were still in Europe when yours and the earlier Whites were hacking each other to pieces.

As someone who is of Lenni Lenape extraction myself – but as my racist relatives remind me how much of a half-breed I am – I have to say this:

We lost. It’s time to put on the big boy pants and get over it.

Glenn, are you bringing up Kelley’s post to gloat about something, or are you bringing it up to point out how racist some of your readers are?

Elusive brought up some excellent points. My main problem with Kelley’s post is that it smacks of the same racism she’s accusing whites of. My ancestors also came here long after the major wars between natives and europeans. But according to her post, just because I’m white is enough to condemn me?

Interestingly, the primary pro-illegal alien group (La Raza – The Race) is as racist as NOW is sexist. Of course, hipocrites like that fail or refuse to see that. And just like NOW, La Raza gets federal grant $$$ to promote its racism. While patriots like the Minutement Project get scrutinized and threatened for protecting our nation!

In any case, the reason Mr. Soberanes was deported is because he illegally crossed the borders and violated the established laws of this nation. If we did the same thing and crossed the borders going to Mexico illegally, we’d be facing jail, torture, and possibly death.

Kudos to Mr. Soberanes for doing the right thing AFTER he broke the law. Shame on the racist who called him an F***ng Mexican. But the fact is, Mr. Soberanes broke the laws that protect our nation and its citizens, and he must be punished for doing so. In this case, deportation isn’t NEARLY as terrible as what would happen to us if we had done the same thing to his country.

If someone robs a bank, then stops to help a child cross the street on his way out the door, he still gets in trouble for robbing the bank!

There is a LEGAL PROCESS for entering and moving into this nation. Every nation has its own laws regarding that process. Those who refuse to respect a nation’s sovereign laws obviously have no respect for that nation. They are not “immigrants”, they are invaders.

Give Mr. Soberanes a temporary visa (and an armed escort) so he can recieve the recognition for his good deed. Then deport him and give him the paperwork so he can apply for citizenship – using the LEGAL process. If he enters the nation illegally again, convict him of a felony.

Think about this, Glenn. Illegal aliens are NOT “immigrants”. The only immigrants are people who respect the laws of the nation they are moving to, and LEGALLY apply for citizenship. Instead, illegal aliens are invaders. Some might be nice, many are not. But they are here illegally, they don’t respect our nation or American citizens, their presence is threatening America’s sovereignity, and they are destroying what infrastructure our nation has left.

If I illegally cross the border with Mexico, don’t register with its authorities, commit a crime and flee, does that make me an immigrant too?

    Respectfully,

Native Americans are good people lets look at how they killed women and children
that where not of there skin color you can find stories about Native American men out
on there war parties scalping little kids as young as 2 years old i am not saying that white settlers where any better but if all settlers where looking to kill all Native Americans they could have in 15years at least they had ten times the number of settlers the the natives ever did 95% Europeans where religious and i doubt they ever promoted killing of anyone it was the OLD US Army that did most of the killing
they killed innocent people of evry race but you can’t blame evry one for there crimes
IF EUROPEANS ARE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS SO ARE THE SO CALLED NATIVE AMERICANS THE AMERICAN CONTINENT IS CONNECTED TO RUSSIA VIA ALASKA
MOST SO CALLED NATIVE AMERICANS ARE LOOKED AT BY MANY COUNTRY’S AS EUR ASIAN A MIX OF RUSSIAN AND CHINES THE FIRST SO CALLED NATIVES LIVED IN ALASKA
    FYI NATIVE AMERICAN ARE

Who said we were responsible for the actions of our ancestors to begin with? Our current generation bears no blame for the atrocities committed against the Native Americans, nor do whites today bear responsibility for slavery – even if they are descendants of slaveholders and/or soldiers who participated in the slaughter of the Native Americans. A person ought only be held accountable for their own action(and, to a lesser extent, the actions of their minor children), not their kin, let alone their nationality, race, or gender.

Oh, and Jesus Cordova Soberanes should be referred to as Señor Cordova, not Señor Soberanes. When native Spanish speakers have two last names, it follows the pattern of First Name, Father’s Last Name, Mother’s Maiden Name. The first of these family names is considered to be their “Last” name.

Okay, then. As a black man, apparently I have complete authority to rule on this. My ancestors didn’t mess with the Indians nor did they mess with the Mexicans.

The Mexican “race” is a mix of Spaniard and the last group of “native-Mexicans” whom the Spaniards conquered. I believe it went something like this – the Spaniards came and attacked and killed most of the Mayans, and took their land. Then they raped and kept as slaves the Mayan girls, and formed the basis for todays Mexican “race”. This sounds terrible, but the Mayans previously had wiped out the Incans and taken their land (and their women.) It’s not like they were some innocent little group of angels who would never cut the heart out of a living teenager and toss it over the side of a pyramid.

But guess what else? The Incans had previously wiped out the Aztecs and taken their land. And before that, the Aztecs had wiped out the Toltecs and taken their land. And before that, the Toltecs had wiped out the Olmecs and taken their land. I may not have these events in the totally correct order, but I assume you get my point. Unless you go way back into pre-history, we don’t really know whose land this is. Not to mention, if you can’t keep it, you don’t own it.

For these Mexicans to claim the American Southwest as “stolen from them” is a total kick in the teeth. They can kiss my black ass. Then they can go home and get in line like the good Mexican-American family next door did. Then they can learn English, for good measure.

Let’s see, it’s 2007. Colombus found the New World in 1492. So, we ‘re fighting about things that took place hundreds of years ago and extrapolating them into todays politics. Yes, for God’s sake what happened was wrong. Yes, what’s happening to day here in America by allowing millions of people who essentially want our wealth (whats left of it) but do not want our culture to come here and destroy our medical, educational and social systems is WRONG.

And yes, lettuce is not $5 a head but try and get seen in an ER or look at the line items in the budget. Our kids are the ones who will inherit this mess, is this really worth talking about what took place hundreds of years ago.

I recently visited a plant in CT that had 1 person (Plant manager) who could speak english, the rest (approximately 75) spanish. The owners spouted with pride the profits gleaned, do the math. These people don’t want the American dream, my parents – both foreigners came here legally and wanted to become Americans. They didn’t demand the schoos teach German, they demanded my sister and I speak english.

A little too much analysis paralysis on this one.

What a bunch of CRAP! As one said, if you break a law you are committing a crime….therefore you are a criminal….no matter what the crime is…
Granted there are different levels of crimes ie) misdemeanors and felonies.

So Glenn, I have lots of respect for the things you do for fathers but your ideals on the “Illegal Alien Invasion” are misguided. IMO

This man should apply for citizenship the right way and our gov. should maybe move his application to the front of the line even though he was here illegally.
But what I gathered from the story was this all transpired right on the border, not like he was “embedded” in one of our communities living off our Social Services like a “LEACH” while we AMERICAN CITIZENS foot the bill. Hes not like the ILLEGALS that flaunt their Criminality by taking to the streets in demonstrations, spitting in the face of every American Citizen and our Laws.

THEY are the ones needing to be deported INSTANTLY, ASAP! (

We MUST do away with the STUPID law that gives instant Citizenship to ANYONE born here. If you are Illegal and have children then those children should be illegals as well.
