Reflections on Super Tuesday, Part I: The Far-Right’s Hysterics over John McCain & Immigration

2008-02-06
By

I appeared on Al-Jazeera’s World News last night to discuss the “Super Tuesday” presidential primary results. The show was shot on location near El Pueblo Historical Monument at Olvera Street and none of the trailers had the equipment to make me a tape, so I don’t have one available yet.  One of the subjects we discussed were the far right/Republican hysterics over John McCain.

I have been surprised and dismayed over some of the reactions from prominent Republicans to John McCain’s recent success.  As many of you know, Rush Limbaugh has denounced McCain and said that if McCain is the Republican nominee, he would prefer that the Democrats win the election.  Ann Coulter went on Hannity & Colmes the other night and said that she would prefer Hillary Clinton–who she views as equivalent to the devil himself–to McCain.

Conservative radio talk shows here in Los Angeles are filled with vehement rhetoric about McCain the traitor who has “sold out America.” It’s hard to believe I’m listening to them describe the man who has been a 100% sure on the war in Iraq and who, perhaps as much as anyone, has staked his political career on an unpopular war because he believes it is the right thing to do.

It’s hard to believe I’m listening to them describe a man who spent several years in a North Vietnamese prison camp and endured torture.  It’s hard to believe I’m listening to them describe the man pictured above looking like a scarecrow as he shook President Richard Nixon’s hand after he was released from captivity in North Vietnam. I’m not one of those who thinks you need to be a veteran in order to be president or to lead us into war or whatever, and I got real tired of John Kerry’s Vietnam shtick in the 2004 election, but to speak of McCain as if he’s a traitor is way over the line.

I like Los Angeles based syndicated talk show host Larry Elder personally, though I don’t always agree with him, but I thought he showed some decency and honor yesterday in defending McCain.  Elder has a long list of things he does not like about McCain, much of which I don’t agree with, but he stood up for him against these attacks.

The biggest reason why people on the far right hate McCain is that McCain, unlike many conservatives, talks sense on immigration.  Sorry, but anybody who thinks that we are going to round up 12 million people–people who are an important part of our economy and who often have deep ties to this country as well as children who are US citizens–is living in a dream world. There will be another amnesty.  The only question is when.

As an aside, one of the producers who booked me for this show is stationed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  When she told me about the gig in Los Angeles, she said that Al Jazeera had set up camp in the “Spanish Quarter.” I was puzzled by this, since I have never heard the term “Spanish Quarter” applied to anywhere in Los Angeles.  I asked my wife, “What does she mean by ‘Spanish Quarter’?” My wife joked, ”Spanish Quarter” means LA County.

The point?  Latinos, whether citizens, legal residents, or undocumented immigrants, are an integral part of the economy, culture, and life of Los Angeles and much of the Southwest.  I certainly have no problem with Latinos, but regardless of how you feel about them, one thing is clear–legal or “illegal,” they’re not going anywhere.

the point that you apparently miss is that amnesty is a magnet. that has been proven. and when there is a discussion on amnesty, the illegal intrusions in to this country dramatically increase. it draws unskilled, low value people, many of which are criminals, that dramatically affect health insurance rates, auto insurance rates, the costs associated with our criminal justice system, and the list goes on and on.

immigration reform is important. we need to cut down on the time it takes to get permission to immigrate. but as someone who has delt directly with immigration, it does not please those that have come here legally, that so many “cut in line” and displace those who can make a real contribution to the US economy and culture.

we don’t need more lawn mowers, bus boys, and day laborers to drive the economy. we need physicists, engineers, scientists, and other highly skilled professionals that can make real and dramatic impacts to our society – rather than adding more drag weight to burdon those that have paid dearly to build and live in this country.

    Glenn-

With McCain the issue is not about far right versus moderate right. It’s about Republican principles: low taxes, smaller government, rule of law, free speech.

What do you say to the people who make big sacrifices to become American citizens? There are people who do it according to the law which, if done by everyone, would be fair to everyone. People wait years, people hire lawyers to help them and spend a good amount of money to do it the honest way. Where is the compassion for these people?

Illegals harm American workers. Americans will have to accept lower wages if they want to compete with a business that hires illegals. Business by necessity will have to pay American’s less if they have to compete with a business hiring illegals. With all the talk about being compassiate towards illegals where is the talk about compassion to these American workers? Strict law enforcement against businesses will over time correct the 12-20 million illegals here.

Identity fraud by illegals is a major problem. Where is the coompassion to American victims of illegals? An American citizen committing ID fraud will get prosecuted. An illegal gets rewarded. How is that right?

10s of millions of illegals tax the health care system. Where is the compassion to the American’s who made all these emergency room hospitals possible and who pay the bills to keep them going?

John McCain will give amnesty to 12-20 million illegals. THAT is a slap in the face of all the honest people who were suckers and fools to follow the law
to become Americans. That spits in the face of the sanctity of American citizenship.

The rule of law matters to Republicans. It’s not a “far right” issue. It’s about principles (and fairness is a principle as is a belief in the rule of law). The government selectively enforces the law. McCain-Kennedy.

John McCain was one of two Senators to oppose Bush’s tax cuts. That is a core Republican principle-not a far right position.

Free speech is a core Republican principle-not a far right one. McCain-Feingold.

To his credit McCain goes after pork spending.

McCain uses his military service as both a weapon and a shield. He is an America hero.

He’s also a liberal. That’s a label that fits McCain. If he does not follow core Republican principles he is not a Republican-even if he calls himself one.

Labeling those that oppose McCain as “far right” and so on simply does not address honesty the issues Republican’s have with McCain.

But that is what passes for politcal discourse in America today.

Glenn, one of your far-right extremists here (because I want a country for me and my children, etc.)…

Sorry Johnny was shot down and tortured. Bad things happen to lots of people. Doesn’t make them unimpeachable. As you know, John suffers from Stockholm syndrome, which is why he shouldn’t be the commander in chief.

You can mislable it rhetoric and xenophobia and bigotry all you want–doesn’t cow me one bit. The more the name-callers tell me to just turn off my brain, the more I’ll give them the finger. You should have been Bush’s press secretary, the way you dissemble. Deport them? Ha ha ha ha ha. Right, Glenn, that’s what those thick-skulled dunce right-wingers like me are all about. Here, Glenn, it’s a take-home: Write a one sentence essay on how to remove most foreign invaders from within our borders without starting up a single paddywagon.

Glenn, ever hear McCain respond to criticism of his part in McCain-Feingold (as one example)? Thank God for words and phrases like “vehement rhetoric,” “xenophobic,” and “right-wing extremist,” else we could never clear the air of the vehement rhetoric and xenophobia of those right-wing extremists and get on to legitimate debate!

Don’t mean to be picky, but could somebody change the word “were” to “was” in the last sentence of the first paragraph? (We all do it.)

  • jjtaup

Roger, you’re not being picky–it bothers me, too!

Glenn, you have set up a straw man here. There is nobody who talks about “rounding up ” anyone.

Enforce the laws. Do not reward lawbreakers, especially just because they are Latino.

    It’s not that hard.

    Cut and Run

Yes, it’s “hard to believe” that McCain could turn out to be a traitor to conservativatism and a collaborator with the Democrats, but that DOESN’T make it untrue. Sure, he was shot down and tortured but that didn’t stop him from bashing the Swift Vets for Truth for John Kerry. He’s lost his way…

Saying we should just throw in the towel and have a more “realistic” immigration policy sounds a lot like, say, Iraq. Why are we fighting a war? Let’s be “realistic”: CUT and RUN!!!

It’s rather trivial to kick out the 12 million illegals who are an “important part of our economy”. That includes the huge taxpayer funded benefits they draw from the educational and healthcare system. Eliminate them. I think we can live without millions of illegals children in our school system. Have the social workers round them up and send them back down to their home countries and offer a free ride to their parents too.

See how “compassionate” I am? Maybe if we were as “compassionate” with our enemies rather than being tortured by them and giving them amnesty, we’d have won by now…

In addition, the other economic “contribution” they make in the form of MS13 gangs and criminals. Deport them too. What about the great economic contribution they make as low paid labor undercutting decent wages for working class people? Crack down on employers. A couple of million dollar fines and business loses here and there sends a big message to EVERYONE. Finally, amend the constitution and eliminate “anchor babies”.

Without having to round them up, most would wind up buying their own bus tickets to the south of the border or BETTER YET, up north to welfare state friendly Canada…

It’s wierd to hear the term “Al-Jazeera” and “hysterics” in the same paragraph and referring to something else.

Labeling those that oppose McCain as “far right” and so on simply does not address honesty the issues Republican’s have with McCain.

But that is what passes for politcal discourse in America today.

One interesting thing out of all this is that I have learned a lesson that there really is a “far right” as well as a “moderate right” and a “leftward” right. Just as McCain is a Republican In Name Only, there are many Republican voters who are the same. I honestly don’t know fully why. Maybe… they like the idea of the Republican philosophy of lower taxes and family values but at the same time like to eat their cake and have it too and sympathize with liberal goodies. Kind of like Bill Clinton jogging but getting more fat.

The concept of a “far left”, on the other hand, is largely laughable. I recall reading polls that suggested a significant minority and even majority believe in the most kooky things including Al-Jazeera as being more reasonable than FoxNews, Osama Bin Laden as a legitimate polical leader and Al-Quaida as a legitimate party, and GW Bush “stealing” the Y2K election. They have squabbles over such family matters as whether a black man is more entitled to the presidency because of his race moreso than a white woman due to her gender, but they largely share the same philosophy of pursuit of power at all costs, cutting up the spoils from attacking unpopular scapegoats (us), and trashing our culture just for the fun of it. That’s it. That’s their agenda in a nutshell and they’re all on board.

The problem with the right is we really do have some housecleaning to do. McCain has a “practiced hand” in reaching out the Democrats to the point that he’s barely indistinguishable from them and he has a lot of company. We’ve also seen that there is the ugly side Democrats like to claim about the south: That they’re a bunch of paranoid good ‘ol boys who don’t like Northerners or Mormons. Some just care about pro-life or the Iraq war and to hell with EVERYTHING else.

Call me what you like, but I don’t want to be in that “party” either. Let them eat cake and let Hillary take the heat for her agenda like Madame Antoinette Pelosi is. Good luck on reducing greenhouse gasses when you fly around in a 747 jet…

First, the McCain-Feingold law is as apalling a violation of the oath to support, protect and defend the Constitution as no fault divorce and the Child Support Crusade.

To pass such an obvious violation of the Constitutional command that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press renders McCain and Feingold and all who supported this obscenity in the name of campaign finance reform fundamentally unfit to draw a paycheck off the taxpayers in any capacity.

That includes YOU, President Bush! For signing the POS.

Second, while Hilary is now at least acknowledging that the federal government’s funding is driving much of the Child Support Crusade and reforms on the federal level might prove helpful, (try enforcing the existing Antipeonage Act, THAT would be helpful!), McCain, when asked a question about that very same thing, said he would not “interfere with the court decisions” and denied that it was a federal issue at all!

That’s funny, I thought the 13th and 14th Amendments and the Antipeonage Act are in fact, federal laws!

I will grant you that Mitt Romney has shown an equal willingness to feign ignorance of these issues as well, and Huckabee is no damn good either.

Ron Paul is now on record as opposing federal interference by means of federal funding of both domestic violence and the Child Support Crusades, but he waited until January 31, after the primary season began, to come out and SAY so.

As for global warming, it is undisputed that the natural carbon cycle involves 160 to 200 billion tons of carbon each year. That’s carbon being absorbed from the atmosphere by plant photosynthesis and chemical weathering and being returned to the atmosphere by metabolism, combustion, and decay. We but add a mere 5 to 7 billion tons each year through our use of fossil fuels, most of which is absorbed by plants who can’t tell the difference between carbon dioxide generated by burning coal and petroleum products and carbon dioxide generated by metabolism.

Therefore, I submit that the effect on climate change of massive government regulation of the production of plant food, as supported by RINO’s Schwarzenegger and McCain, will be ZERO.

Unfortunately, it would be such a disaster for the American economy that the illegal Mexicans will be rushing back to Mexico to find a better a life!

I am not sure we really want to solve the problem of illegal immigration that way.

  • Scott66

What in the hell does McCain’s war record have to do with a discussion about illegal immigration? Anyone making this argument is being disingenuous.

As for illegals being a part of the American economy. Yea they are. They are basically a huge tax burden on the rest of us. And the question is not just about these 12-20 million but the additional 60-100 million family members that would be allowed to immigrate if McCain’s amnesty bill was allowed to pass. Does anyone really think allowing upwards of 100 million high-school dropouts into our country is a model for economic success?
