Lacking the votes to restrict wiretapping by the executive branch, Democrats are instead trying to do it through the backdoor by punishing telephone companies
Source: Wall Street Journal.
Stiff Right Jab responds: The Wall Street Journal summarizes its position:
We’ve long held that a President doesn’t need a court order under the Constitution to order such wiretaps. But the reality is that, because of these lawsuits, the telephone companies now won’t cooperate without the legal protection of a court order. …
What we have here is a remarkable display of the anti-antiterror minority at work. Democrats could vote directly to restrict wiretapping by the executive branch, but they lack the votes. So instead they’re trying to do it through the backdoor by unleashing the trial bar to punish the telephone companies. Then if there is another terror attack, they’ll blame the phone companies for not cooperating.
A reminder to the Wall Street Journal: There are plenty of folks on the right who are equally disturbed with the precedent of warrantless wiretaps. Are they being abused already? Will they be abused in the future? Are principles compromised come every “crisis?”
Under the communist dialect, a crisis is when the existing order of a certain thing meets an unforeseen change in the circumstances (thesis meets anti-thesis) and what results is a transformational moment, where a new thesis arises, and the old is totally discarded. This is what we have here. It is a dangerous precedent, and should be opposed with all of our energy. Principle is principle.
Great nations ought not maneuver, not compromise eternal principles, inalienable rights, national sovereignty, and their constitutions when troubles come. Great nations insist that the belligerents do.
