Authorities in Afghanistan say a suicide car bomber has killed three NATO soldiers and four Afghans in southern Helmand province.

The Danish defense ministry has confirmed that two Danish soldiers were killed in Monday’s attack near the town of Girishk. The Czech defense ministry also said one of its soldiers died in the bombing.

NATO officials say one of the Afghan victims worked as an interpreter for the troops. The others were civilians.

Authorities say four soldiers and at least six Afghan civilians were wounded in the attack.

No one has claimed responsibility for the violence.

Helmand is a key battle ground for international forces and militants loyal to the Taliban, which was pushed from power by a U.S.-led invasion in 2001.

The province generates most of Afghanistan’s opium-producing poppies, which partly fund the insurgency.

Separately today, NATO officials say a Canadian soldier has died of his wounds, after being hit by an explosion Sunday in Kandahar province.
