...by calling for Congressional approval of the trade agreement with Colombia, is compelling liberal-progressives to choose between the high-flown, one-world internationalism to which they give lip service and kow-towing to organized labor. ...
>>>

No leftist I know would have any trouble with this "dilemma". Trade unionists are being murdered at an alarming rate in Colombia with the blessing of President Álvaro Uribe, "a free-trader and a bulwark against the spreading influence in Latin America of Venezuela's leftist strongman, President Hugo Chávez."

As usual, President Bush is on the wrong side of history (not to mention being on the wrong side of any ethical standard). Somebody has been reading too much Ayn Rand and not enough Adam Smith. Mr. Smith was a great theorist in his time; but I'm sure that, were he alive today, he would be very busy revising his original work, recognizing that there have been some monumental changes in capitalism since the 18th century.

He saw capitalism as an economic system that would benefit ALL the people, whereas today's cheerleaders follow in the footsteps of Ms. Rand, and consider the plight of those whose labor is exploited only as an afterthought. I think Smith would have done his best to save capitalism from itself...a task I doubt even he could not accomplish.

It is people like President Uribe--and George Bush-- who will make preliminary arrangements for Capitalism's eventual funeral. Uribe is just a drag on today's--and tomorrow's--South America.

It is not wise to trust in the courage of the current crop of Congressional Democrats. So far, their "leadership" have shown not one whit of courage or character....or we would not still be stuck with our current President. Truth to tell, I see no more courage or character in either person that the Democratic Convention will, presumably, nominate. Still, Events have a habit of overtaking History. So, we'll see......

Today's union leadership has not been able to get their collective heads around the idea that: Their members need to have jobs for there to be a union. No jobs...no need for a union.

The unproductive mentality of organized labor from teachers unions and other government unions, to industrial unions is to promote un-productivity in an attempt to create the need for more workers in a downward double helix. More jobs for union members at higher wages.
