I think you are making too much out of nothing. I did not read the Globe article, but your quotations do not seem to support what you are trying to say.
However to emphasize rejection letters as failure is a bit extreme. I did fine on the SAT's and got into the school I wanted. No rejections. Maybe I did not try hard enough. If I had applied to Yale, I might have gotten in.
I did pretty well on the law school entrance exams too. I applied to Yale on a lark; I got into the school I wanted, and I never heard back from Yale. What ticked me off was they kept my $35.00, and I did not even get a rejection letter.
No, rejection letters should not be "celebrated," but they are hardly a failure. I would be far more concerned about America's youth if they truly believed their worth as human beings were dependent on the yahoos in college admissions offices.
The lesson is: failure is a part of life. But, not getting into a particular college is not the end of the world. I don't see the big deal.

Warner Todd, you nasty man. Not a shred of empathy. You'll never make the grade in our new touchy-feely post-feminist world. You just give ammunition to the harpies and show that chaps just 'don't get it'. We have no feelings at all. All those poor little diddumses NEED a hug. They are deprived. And if it wasn't for the few remaining men creepily skulking around the classrooms looking for opportunities to touch up kids, the women teachers - REAL professionals - would hug those little flowers all day long and sing nursury rhymes to them.

As for criticisng them for their expressive, creative language, what does a mere uncommunicative man know about it?

Some might just think that you'd benefit from some re-educating !

(all with tongue in cheek, of course - in case I get quoted!).

Si hoc signum legere potes, operis boni in rebus Latinus alacribus et fructuosis potiri potes! *

If "feeling good" is where we're headed, moving to Mongolia is starting to look pretty dang good.. At least their tax codes are only two pages long.
