“If you’re not a feminist, you’re not a progressive.”
Apparently men who don’t subscribe to the modern, bastardized version of feminism aren’t allowed to be in the Democratic Party/progressive/liberal camp any more. With what one might see as more than a little presumption, feminist blogger Melissa McEwan declared this yesterday in her Important Announcement:
“Feminism is an integral part of progressivism. If you’re not a feminist, you’re not a progressive. No matter how much you hate Bush. No matter how much you hate the Iraq war. No matter how much you hate our current torture policy. No matter how much you want to restore habeas corpus. No matter how much you’re totally going to vote for the Democrat in November. If you’re not a feminist, you’re not a progressive. You’re a fauxgressive.”
This is particularly wrong when one considers fathers who are politically on the left. These dads are essentially being told that the price of their political beliefs is to support the same feminist political forces which have made it so difficult for divorced dads to have shared custody of their children and remain a part of their kids’ lives. It’s a good example of how the left drives men away.
[Late note: A feminist blogger pointed out that apparently the "open wide" and "shut up" that I originally quoted at the end of McEwan's piece are actually part of her blog's software and are not part of the post. I've deleted them--my mistake.]

please explain this equality to me Franko.
i’m interested how this ‘equality’ plays out when only one person gets to call the shots for the others when all the players are supposed to be equal.

Let’s just say that if she didn’t explicitly rule out the nasty variation (that even you seem to accept exists) then it might be reasonable for a listener to think she was. This view is especialy justified in light of her present rant which displays all the elements of the nasty feminism (dictating right and wrong to others, excluding disenting views, and insulting listeners who might not share her opinion.)
Feminism is no longer about making people equal. A feminist these days (both the nasty and good variation) *starts* with the assumption that women have less rights and less power than men. Their focus is exclusively on increasing the rights and power of women without any consideration of what equal is. If someone believes, as many people on this website do, that women are already treated equally, or every better, than men, then it becomes obvious that any and all feminism is just your standard, run of the mill, power grab.
