Abkhaz rebels shot down a Georgian spy plane recently, according to the foreign ministry of Russia. Georgian officials have blamed Russia for the incident. Putin, the Russian President, said that he was bewildered by the Georgian government’s alleged move of sending a spy plane into that area.
Russia has denied any involvement with the shooting. International newspaper The Christian Science Monitor reported that “diplomatic tensions have flared in the Caucasus over the fate of a Georgian spy plane allegedly shot down Sunday as it flew over a breakaway pro-Russian region.”
The foreign ministry of Russia released a statement on the issue. It said that the aircraft “was shot down by Abkhaz anti-aircraft weapons.” A statement was also released by a general from the Russian Air Force. He claimed that “the Russian air force has nothing to do with this. That’s not our business.”
