Jindal in Spotlight over Intelligent Design

Governor Bobby Jindal, a possible Republican Vice Presidential candidate from the U.S. state of Louisiana, appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday and said he supports teaching intelligent design (ID) in public school as “the very best science.” Jindal, who was elected governor in 2007, is a Hindu convert to Catholicism.

“Some want only to teach intelligent design, some only want to teach evolution,” Jindal said during his exchange on the Sunday morning talk show. “I think both views are wrong, as a parent.”

During a debate in September, 2007, Jindal articulated his rationale for his support of Intelligent Design, saying, “…it certainly makes sense to me that when you look at creation, you would believe in a creator.”

Earlier this week, the Louisiana House of Representatives passed legislation, know as the “Louisiana Science Education Act”, which Governor Lindal is expected to sign.

The National Center for Science Education has said that passage of the Louisiana Science Education Act would open “the door to creationism in public school science classes.”

Some teachers in Louisiana expressed excitement over the bill. “This is great news for the science teachers in public school classrooms in Louisiana, and it’s great news for science education in the whole State of Louisiana,” said Wade Warren, Professor of Biology and Cavanaugh Chair in Biology at Louisiana College, who testified in favor of the bill before the Louisiana legislature last month. “Not all DNA and fossil evidence support a Darwinian view of life. This bill gives teeth to the freedom of a public school science teacher to ask their students to objectively analyze the scientific data.”

If Intelligent Design has been dismissed by top Scientific Institutions, it has likewise proven unpopular in the US Federal Court. In 2005, John E. Jones III, a federal judge appointed by George W. Bush, ruled in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District that “For the reasons that follow, we conclude that the religious nature of ID [intelligent design] would be readily apparent to an objective observer, adult or child” (page 24).

Jindal is currently considered a possible Vice President candidate for John McCain’s U.S. Presidential campaign.
