Does reading this lead you to want to visit the Decatur Library?

The Decatur Library is the largest library building in the DeKalb System of Atlanta, Georgia. Located at 215 Sycamore St. in Decatur, the library is right across from the Decatur MARTA Station. It has four floors and “is really two buildings put together,” according to Matt Montgomery, Public Information Officer of the Dekalb Library System. The front part of the building is the original structure built in the late ’40s and opened in 1950. “It was renovated completely in the late ’80s as part of a bond initiative,” Montgomery relates. “That same bond initiative doubled the size of the Dekalb Library System.”

“It has around 140,000 volumes,” Montgomery continues, and “is the main reference library of the Dekalb system. If you have major reference questions, Decatur is the place to come. We always have at least one reference librarian on the second floor and, usually, two. We’ve got the largest resources of electronic reference data, ten internet terminals, and CD ROM databases that give access to that network.”

The library boasts the Special Collections Room where you will find genealogical and local history materials. Included are the Georgia Death Index, the Georgia Marriage Register, Decatur Cemetery records from 1837-1979 and census information going back to 1790.

The Decatur Library also hosts The Golden Classic Film Series for senior citizens. On the third Thursday of each month, a motion picture is shown at 10:00 a.m. in the Decatur Library Auditorium. To get to the Auditorium, you must take the elevator down to the ground floor. The films are chosen to appeal to seniors and may be either classic or contemporary movies. Attendance is free of charge but limited to the first 164 attendants.

After a boost like that, Denise, I will drop in when I am next in town. While they will have to make space for future growth in the Death Records I am pretty confident that they will have plenty of room in a small cupboard for the foreseeable future Marriage Records.
