I'm not arguing about the definition, I merely state what the word means. It's mentioned fairly much in passing in fact (although I really did think it worth mentioning). The point being that people don't understand the American political system and its history. They need to. Misunderstanding of the word "liberal" is, if nothing else, a clear indication of how really badly political history, philosophy, and the American Way are misunderstood.

This is logic. Your definition of the word is fine with me,when we argue. My point is that argument over a definition is not logic and is pointless. Time to use another word.

T Finnan;

Controlling the language is part of controlling a population. It is part of the propaganda process that eliminates effective democracy. It has not been generally agreed that "liberal" now means dictatorship or Marxism or fascism or any of the other false associations that the political world engages in. Restatement of the meaning of the word is useful in helping people differentiate and choose wisely.

BTW: Do you disagree with my definition of the word? What do you think it means?

Agreed, the two party system is effectively dead.

Nothing has turned special interest politics into a single-minded power machine more than the notion of the "dollar vote", updheld and essentially limitless in the eyes of federal courts. The dollar-vote is no longer a donation alone -- it is a closed-loop of seed money and return on political contribution -- bribery and payback.

Limiting individual contributions is of no consequence where "privatization" has created a huge mass of politically-motivated voters intent on getting more of the federal dole for themselves. Their desires sync up with that of governmental administrative bureaucracies, which are in themselves a huge and controlling voting bloc. It is difficult to find people who are not, in some way, inured to it.

Obama was wise to opt out of federal financing and is reaping the rewards of totally unfettered political donations from this mafia-like system.

This system began when Nixon strangely went for a very private boat ride with crime boss Bebe Rebozo (government was at war with crime syndicates at the time). Nobody knows what was said. I am quite positive that Nixon laid out the idea of internalizing the syndicates as an extension of government. Since that time, the purpose and function of government has changed to behave this way in both obvious and subtle. Gambling is now an official government function: every state having a tremendous slush fund of money that largely goes unaccounted for. TANF block grants with little guidance (in the name of state's rights)seed rampant divorce for the benefit of trial lawyers and the various helping professions, who in themselves encourage politically-motivated professional "policy" bearing no semblance of fact, reason, or science. Then there is Blackwater. This list goes on forever.....

The net result is two candidates who both get large donations from these self-entitling quasi-governmental interests, who both are inured to these donations, and who subsequently adopt positions and behaviour largely similar. Those who do not play this game cannot get the nod from Party leadership, who are there to officiate continuance of the machine.

This arrangement will crash and burn. It is not possible to maintain an "information based" economy that produces nothing except more information, more policy, more exported jobs and debt, more buy-offs, and more bailouts. This notion is at an end-stage, along with the political system that drives it.

Roger, yes. My point is a definition is a mutually agreed upon description. There is no right or wrong definition of a word, only the mutually agreed description. Changing the definitions while keeping the conclusions results in a false conclusion. i.e. "This is a cool place" can have many meanings and an argument over which is right is dumb. .

<i>Arguments over definitions are stupid, i.e. liberalism.</i>

Don't you think it's important for citizens to understand the basics of our Constitutional system of government?

Arguments over definitions are stupid, i.e. liberalism. The corruption in our country is due to a monolithic major media system. Somehow, journalists decide which issues are important and what corruption to report. People are worried about a few detainees at Gitmo and unconcerned about millions of men being deprived of their rights which happens before them locally. Corrupt judges are not exposed. PC allows only correct thought and speech. People have always wanted a king as reported in Samuel in the Old Testament. There is no person or committee that can be trusted. Power corrupts and more power corrupts more.
