I think you are wrong. I don’t believe Americans know what patriotism is at all. I blame our capitalist system for that. We are taught by everyone that we can be anything and have everything. We therefore think that we are deserving of it and we do whatever we can to get what we want. How many people put their country’s needs in front of their own? Would you vote against what’s best for you if it’s better for our country as a whole? How many business owner’s, entrepreneurs or upper class people join the military? How come it’s the ones with the cleanest hands that are always urging us to get dirty? No one knows what it is to be a patriot because they are always too concerned with what is in their own best interest, i.e. what puts the most amount of money in their pocket. I am not preaching communism, it has flaws as well. I just believe that in a money driven society, no one wants to sacrifice anything of their own, no matter how well it improves the whole. Excess is our way of life. It’s not about everyone having what they need, its about accumulating more than you could ever want. Simply because you’re an American, and it’s your “God given right”.

Amen Mr. Huston.
Unfortunately, most of these people that “found” their patriotism will tire from actually displaying it shortly. They feel all warm and fuzzy now but when they realize you should bring your flag in at night if not properly lit they will quit displaying the flag. Just watch any sports game National Anthem…I always see hundreds in the crowd that don’t remove headgear, don’t render proper salute/hand over heart,,etc. Hell, some don’t even bother standing up. College age liberals have no clue what patriotism is because they do not get taught what it means to honor your country. Only how to do it harm. Spoiled “give-me this because I’m special” mentality is what comes from academia now. We are at an point in history where the true patriots may have to teach that lesson once more.
Sorry to ramble and I loved your post. It is refreshing to read aricles like this once and a while.
