Review: Able Planet’s Clear Harmony Noise Canceling Headphones
Listening on my iPod through the Clear Harmony headphones, about 20 minutes into the movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, an alien space ship is approaching the Mall in Washington DC. There is the din of sirens in the background and soldiers passing in progression. You hear a braided cocking of machine guns, and then a helicopter tracks left and above across the audioscape. There is a bright light on the iPod screen and suddenly the hash of sounds falls to a pin drop. In another moment, voices can be heard dimly in the background — and then the clear sound of a human breath.
I won’t tell you want happens next. But I can tell you that Clear Harmony conveyed every audio nuance in the soundtrack. The ears of my iPod never sounded this good.
Able Planet’s Active Noise Canceling Clear Harmony headphones are a single top-of-the-line solution that works with your computer and most a/v portable devices, including the iPod and iPhone. It also comes with a black travel case, and a dual-pin audio adapter for use on airline flights.
The sleek black design is surprisingly light-weight and fully adjustable. The ear pads have a pillow-like feel, and when your ears are enfolded, extraneous sounds take on a muffled, background quality. Even your own voice is heard more as a vibration in you throat than a sound in your ears.
That’s just the start, of course. Because on top of that easy silence, the sound produced by your favorite a/v player becomes crystalline and subtle.
Able Planet says the secret is their proprietary Linx Audio™ technology. Originally designed for high-end hearing aids, Linx Audio™ uses frequency harmonics to clarify the butter of sound your ear usually receives on an airplane or public transit.
At $299 these phones aren’t for the bargain shopper. But if you’re ready for your best pair of headphones ever, they’re here.
