Who are River Smith and Heidi Raynor and What Kind of Cult are They Running?

Allaboutcounseling.com- They appear to be to mental health support what pedophiles are to playgrounds.

Complaints are currently being filed against the owners and operators of the internet website known as allaboutcounseling.com

These events began as an almost routine story about a mental health advocacy website spreading disinformation about domestic violence that demonizes men, denies male victims and shields female perpetrators.

And while the disinformation is there in abundance, more digging behind the scenes at allaboutcounseling.com revealed what appears to be gross professional misconduct and an ongoing scheme involving psychological extortion, abuse and depraved indifference. Multiple sources have alleged that the site management is preying on and manipulating site users for cash with the finesse and brio reminiscent of a corrupt televangelist operation.

And they are reportedly heaping a plethora of emotional abuses and threats on site users who speak up against it.

All of this is being conducted under the auspices of mental health advocacy; with the professional blessings (and under the state license number) of a clinical psychologist.

The details of this story have the expected intricacies and complications of most scandals, especially with the efforts that the alleged perpetrators have made to disconnect their names from their actions. But the scam runs something like this:

Allaboutcounseling.com runs a members only on-line forum in which individuals are invited to join and participate for the benefit of “Confronting fears, honest feedback and active growth through the use and benefits of anonymity and healthy communication.”

Users are made to believe that their interactions there are completely anonymous and conducted in an environment where it is safe to be openly vulnerable and to disclose intimate details of problems in their lives.

For some this seems to be the case.

But many former site users are saying that frequently what happens there is markedly different. In fact, after a month long study of the site and several interviews with former ACC members, the reports have enough consistency to raise eyebrows.

In what appears to be a systematic pattern of significant abuses, the site management presents professional psychological qualifications, induces users to rely on the forum as a source of peer and arguably professional support, but subsequently acts toward many of the members with the following:

  • Banning users without notice, reason and without a referral to other help.
  • Redirecting banned users to pornography websites when they attempt to log on.
  • Tacit email threats to expose users identities publicly for dissenting from site management
  • Site management “diagnosing” members with personality disorders as a reaction to dissent.
  • Regularly threatening members who depend on the site forum to close it unless money is donated.
  • Encouraging the abuse of most male members and abusively targeting female members who had congenial communications with males.
  • Fomenting conflict between forum members and encouraging some individuals to abuse others.

In fact, as I studied reports of the abuses from some of the sites former members, the picture that clearly emerged was that of tactics used by cult leaders to control and manipulated their followers. Or, as one member, who requested anonymity, put it, “I felt that it was abusive because of the way {they} chummed vulnerable, trusting people who came to the site, and drew them in to a charmer/abuser codependency cult.”

This same member, after posting that she felt the instigated conflict helped the hit count of the site was reportedly told publicly by site management that she was “delusional, sick and paranoid.”

Another member, again speaking on the condition of anonymity, reported being banned from the site without notification and then being redirected to a pornography site when he attempted to log on.

Part of his reaction to this, taken from a statement which is available in the comments section at avoiceformen.com, was unsettling. “I had always respected the site coordinator,” he said, “but after she did this to me I was sad to say the least. I was hurt. I felt deeply betrayed, humiliated and abused.”

Another former member reported that she too was redirected to a pornography site after being banned from the forum.

And yet another member reported getting an email from site management that repeatedly demeaned her, and made multiple references to her location, number of children and her profession. This was interpreted as a veiled threat to reveal her identity or worse. And it is of particular concern because there are many members who have joined the allaboutcounseling.com forum for support when escaping abusive relationships in which they were or are being stalked.

Such a breech of confidence in those situations could have disastrous results.

On the surface, some of this behavior may appear part and parcel to the internet. There is a lot of flaming going on, and capricious site administration is hardly rare. It happens on a lot of websites. But this isn’t just a lot of websites. It is a site that proffers, with professional credibility, to extend support to people at highly vulnerable moments in their lives. Indeed, it beckons them to participate throughout most pages on the site and assures them they are in a safe environment.

These actions not only reflect a moral deficit, but are likely in violation of the State of Ohio’s rules and regulations governing professional counselors, the American Psychological Associations Code of Conduct, and various other state laws. This is especially true as site management presents professional credentials, accepts money and has no disclaimer regarding participation in the forums.

“Site management” is most likely better identified as Heidi Raynor, M.Ed., who in her bio claims to be an experienced counselor with two years of individual counseling experience, but lists no license information or professional references.

She also apparently doubles in the site forum as “Site Coordinator or “SC” as users refer to her. Raynor herself never openly makes the admission that she is SC, but in several posts, SC claims ownership of the site and solicits for donations regularly. Those donations have to be made payable directly to Raynor and are to be mailed to 4227 W. 15th, Cleveland, Ohio.

Raynor states in her solicitations that checks must be made out to her personally, and not to allaboutcounseling.com, leaving the speculation open to whether or not she is claiming the income when filing taxes.

Raynor is not acting alone. According to information provided on the site, the content on allaboutcounseling.com was authored by River Smith, Ph.D.. Further investigation revealed that Smith is an Ohio based clinical psychologist who practices under Ohio State license number 4658, at 11206 Clifton Blvd., Cleveland, Ohio tel. 216-651-1302

According to information received from a source at the State Board of Psychology of Ohio, Dr. Smith’s presence as one of the creators of that site, and the provision of his license number, inextricably ties him to the conduct and practices of it’s managers, whether that conduct comes directly from Dr. Smith or not.

And under those circumstances, that translates legally to the site and everyone who manages it being subject to all applicable statutes and codes of conduct for that profession.

Most of Smith’s role appears to be providing content related to mental health issues, making him the direct source of the misleading statistics and disinformation. But also by attaching his credentials to a site that is taking money, he puts his license on the line for any improprieties and ethical violations that transpire.

It also raises the significant question of whether the site is, in reality, an online psychology practice. Early information from the state of Ohio suggests that it is, though there will not be a final determination on this until complaints about the site have been investigated by officials in Ohio.

According to several of the former members of the site, Dr. Smith may be in direct violation of several statutes that govern the practice of psychology in that state. These include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Failure to report sexual abuse of children to authorities (there were several posts by members that reported their children being abused)
  • Failure to report physical abuse of children
  • Failure to report suicide threats by members
  • Children being allowed to log on and read detailed and sexually explicit accounts of other members lives.
  • Domestic abuse reports ignored by site management
  • Questionable solicitations for money
  • Presentation of misleading information
  • Proffering false counseling qualifications

Regarding the child molestations, according to a source at the Ohio State Board of Psychology, psychologists are mandated to report knowledge of child abuse to authorities and it makes no difference that the reports were received online, nor does it matter that the reports came from anonymous sources. Discovery of the sources is a police matter, not one for the psychologist to undertake or even be concerned with. Their mandate under state law is to report these incidents immediately.

There is no evidence that any reports with police were filed, meaning that a licensed psychologist and another individual claiming to be a professional counselor knew or should have known that children were being abused and did nothing– but ask for more money.

At the time this article goes live, at least two and perhaps more individuals are compiling complaints against allaboutcounseling.com which will be filed with The Ohio State Board of Psychology and The American Psychological Association. This summary and a copy of the complaints will also be forwarded to the Ohio State Attorney General’s Office for consideration.  Other former members have indicated they are considering complaints or other actions against the site’s ownership and management.

When I first brought this story to avoiceformen.com and mensnewsdaily.com, I also forwarded it to about two hundred psychotherapists that supported the site by listing their services there and by purchasing an enhanced presence in the site directory.

To their credit, several of those clinicians directed allaboutcounseling.com to remove their listings. Most did not, however, and did not respond to my emails. Their practice information is listed below.

Once the complaints with the named agencies and the State Attorney General have been filed, an update will be provided regarding this matter. And in the update, I will begin exploring how the practice of “feminist therapy” has naturally led to such abuses of ethics and hopefully what can be done to stop it.

I ask your pardon for the lengthy list of professionals included here, but it is necessary to the process to get the information disseminated through the internet.  This list is just a fraction of the counseling professionals that list their services on ACC.

AAC name should be ALL ABOUT CRAZYMAKING. Ya, just dont set up a website dedicated to people who are mentally in pain then play sick games with their minds. First, they bait them with pictures of friendly looking people who have licenses and credentials, in counseling. Then, they gain your trust and start hiding behind all of these masks of various nick names. The one thing that I find disturbing is you have what could be a licensed psychologist, drawing females in then talking about sexually explicit details in his life while pretending to be just another visitor on the site. The other thing is this SC who stated they were the one and only SC on AAC who is hiding behind a variety of names as well. I feel sorry for the lonley members of this forum who honestly believe they have formed all of these bonds with people who are really just fake nicks that Heidi and River have created. You know that something strange is going on when a site goes ballistic just because a person signs on and asks that the dogmatic, archaic articles on the site be updated. Like this is some major threat to their security? Paul is correct with reporting this. I havent been posting there that long and after reading all the ifo. here, I just cant return to that site again. I spoke to my husband about what is going on at AAC and he is 100% supportive of me reporting them to the authorities.

Hello Bevdee. I have been following your posts for the longest time. At first, I had to wonder. It all sounded unreal. Until I started connecting the dots. To say the least you are a very intelligent person.

I would like to validate your perceptions. I did notice that Chelonia’s nick is very specific to a person who has an advance education in the same field that Heidi Raynor AKA SC does. They both hike, are not married, have no children, right down to the most intricate detail.

Chelonia has trouble getting along with people at her work, much in the same way the SC on AAC has difficulty with getting along with the members on the site. Most of the time she ignores them or bans or fires them. When Chelonia started a thread about a worker calling her “manipulative”. Gee I wonder why? She is not only “manipulative” she is unethical. Sorry, but you dont start a web site under the guise of trying to help people in need of counseling then start trolling your own site with various nick names, and threads that have 1/2 truths in them. You dont decieve people like that unless of course you are “manipulative”.

Reality is the majority of the site is made up of a handful of people who are using a boat load of nick names. The biggest offenders are the SC AKA Heidi and the Co. SC River AKA WorriedDad.

Bevdee, you have really opened up my eyes. I just want to let you know that all of the pain and suffering that AAC has caused you has not been done in vain. I have called the Psychology Licensing Board in Ohio and will be filing a formal complaint against this manipulative con-artist.

I remember when I didn’t see what was going on at the site. It was fun then.

There were lively debates on Liberation. Always discussions about religion. Great discussions about introspection, the sicence of self-examination.

On Support, there were caring people talking to each other, providing real food for thought. Those who came for support got it. They were welcomed by people offering more – more than a quick diagnosis, more than advice to get counseling immediately. More than an invitation to go to the Coffeehouse to get pastries and latte. More than posts by AnamCara that are cut and pasted from English tourism advertisements. Visit Bath….

Lots of these old time posters must be played out, writing. If it is fresh material, it’s not original, it’s copied from other codependency sites, usually without attributing the real author, or a link to the site it was plagiarised from.

Oh, AAC – caincha do no better?

Look at that – Worried_Dad seems to be stepping in for the Site Coordinator. “A voice for “SC”?

Or – one of several voices? W_D’s solo? Monologue? Rally to the site? I wonder who will step in to agree with him?

Every time someone disagrees with Worried_Dad or the “other” Site Coordinator, they claim abuse. I have never been able to figure out if they are for real with this, or if they are trying to garner sympathy and rally the site into a gang to distract from the topic.

If they are for real, it could be said that Caraway was the first to “abuse” the new poster, Style 89, in the thread – *Site needs to be updated*, accusing him of lashing out, but the “site” is turning it around to Style being the abusive one and misbehaving. Beause Style went against the norm? Threatens the security of the site? Waawaa.

What I see is that those “static” stats remain after 2 1/2 months. The population ha dwindled to almost nothing, other than threads started by ‘newbies”.

    From Dictionary.com -

*1. pertaining to or characterized by a fixed or stationary condition.
*2. showing little or no change: a static concept; a static relationship.
*3. lacking movement, development, or vitality: The novel was marred by static characterizations, especially in its central figures.
*4. Sociology. referring to a condition of social life bound by tradition.”

Yeah- to all of them. Some communities, such as the Amish, are bound by tradition, a closed system.

    The site is static now.

Paul posted at the end of September about the site stats. I guess WorrierDad is too preoccupied with his online dating, love life snafus to take care of dv stats, his CARD CARRYING specialty. uh huh.

Or- maybe they have been consulting with the State of Ohio, and lawyers?

Phoney Balognie Chelonia and Worried Dad are pathetic. Posers. Creating these fake identities to attract abused people. Phonie chelonie claims to be living in Mexico. Yeah, right. Mexicans dont even want to live in Mexico. It is a third world, violent, improvished country. Not exactly a safe place for a femle to be.

Now I have to say my 2 cents worth. What I dont understand is … how will site coordinator have time to research gender statistics & update them if she is posting as Chelonia Mydas and welcoming all new people to the site? I always had suspicion of Chelonia was one of the SiteCoordinators.
Every time somwone posts on this blog, Chelonia makes sympathy, support please. all these animals dieing her grandmother just died & she’s sick with a cold. !?! That’s enough for anyone let alone someone who has the respondibility of having a job and maintaining a web site on the side. She finds Xmas stories to post to the site, compliments each poster. Keep posting.
Why would she ask someone else to do it for her? Why only the Worried_Dad?

Paul, the hiding of all the info ALL OF A SUDDEN, is very telling. And still – the dv stats are the same. Too lazy to update stats, but not too busy to try to remove traces of their identity.

I bet they’re glad we’re all such dumbasses we don’t know how to cut and paste!! lol.

Interview with pro-feminist male activist, River Smith
    WRUW 91.1 FM Cleveland
    Thursday 02 May 2002
    7-7:30pm
River Smith is a profeminist male who has been an activist nationally and in the Cleveland area for over 25 years.

    River is also…
    * the co-founder of the Men’s Action Network Domestic Violence Group,
    * the former co-chair of the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS), and
    * an ecofeminist poet and songwriter.

River describes himself as pro-feminist versus feminist largely due to criticism from a few people who believe that you must be a woman in order to be a feminist. Profeminist indicates that although you are not a woman, you still believe in and fight for the feminist cause.

River is the co-founder of the Men’s Action Network Domestic Violence Group. This support group offers learning, counseling, discussion, and rehabilitation services for men who batter. The focus of the group is to stop the domestic violence from occurring. However, River goes beyond getting the men to admit and address the problem; he tries to redefine the way that men are conditioned by society to react to problems and conflict with other people.

Attributes for a New Masculinity by River Smith
These were first published in the Plain Dealer in 1998. The list consists of 13 important attributes that men should strive for to be more complete in their masculinity. While these attributes apply generally to all humans, they are often underemphasized in their importance to men. River uses these attributes for his Domestic Violence Group as well as for other support and rehabilitation groups. In the interview, he goes into more depth on a few of them.

    The important attributes are:
Honesty Commitment Willingness Generosity Active, Joyful Assertiveness
Accountability Vigilance Courage Warmth Active Non-violent Agitation
    Acceptance Openness Sensitivity

River also reads two of his poems in the interview.

If you wish to contact River and get more information about his activist work, his phone number is 216-651-1302, and e-mail address is LiBrew2@aol.com.

As far as SC is concerned if she is Chelonia Mydas I think that animal control needs to be called about all of the animals that are living in her home in cages. Peww must smell gross. NO animal should have to live in a cage in their own feces. I also hope they have their rabies shots and are licensed. This business of prefering to sleep with animals worries me. Hope there isnt anything as sick as beastiology involved. Really these people are freaks. Super freaks. The type that are into collecting abused females and animals. Helpless creatures. All the signs of control freaks.

Woa. I went to that web site and if that isn’t a dead ringer for WD. WD has a fetish for sexually and phsycially abused females. He even went so far as to look into a females court records and wrote about how some man pulled her pubic hair out one by one, etc. really gory details then went on to say how he was turned on by her. This man is sick. He is turned on by females who have been abused and spends all of his time preying on them. He has a thread up now on lib. brew where he has a female victim hope in him falling for him hook line and sinker. Really sick how he tells her she can trust him. Sure a person she doesnt even know. If this female has any hopes of getting better she needs to quit trusting strange men and stay away from males all together until she gets the help that she needs. If WD is River and he is using the site to prey on vulnerable females, and actually engages in any type of romantic relationship with one he can wind up in some serious trouble. If WD is a licensed therapist I dont believe it is ethical or legal for him to be giving advice on the internet while hiding behind the mask of a fake name. The licensing board in ohio needs to be tipped off about this

  13. Well, the complaint is in to two different agencies and now we play the waiting game. In the meantime, we have witnessed some very telling changes at AAC. First, they removed all email addresses for providers in their directory so they attempt to keep them from being contacted. Then they solicited help from their own members to rewrite the information on domestic violence and finally, the big one, the went underground by removing all traces of their identities and importantly removing the presence of credentials from River Smith and whatever Heidi’s claims are to professional experience.

They even removed the link to River Smith’s book, which has all the signs of “get me the hell off your site” written all over it.

A final success won’t be known until we have heard back from the state of Ohio and the APA on actions against them. But in the meantime the message is clear. They are running scared and know that the gig is up. They have fundamentally changed their modus operandi and now, whatever the outcome of the complaints filed, they know people will be watching them.

I am smiling here, and want to again express my appreciation to all of you who hung in there and helped.

Yeah, that’s rich irony, isn’t it? I always thought there was much more than meets the trusting eye at that site.
Now the donation information has changed. You no longer snail mail donations to the residential address given. It’s to a p.o.box.

all the info that points to responsibility and accountability at the site is disappearing. but the stats to dv and “new masculinity stay the same. he posts his “new masculinity” here – http://www.voicesandchoicesradio.org/programs/shows/44.html

Here’s an old thread from AAC – kinda funny after all the denials about multiple SC’s. “PLEASE READ – Regarding loss of content here – Site CoordinatorBelow

    site coordinator
    30-Jun-04

    Hello again,
    It’s safe to post, really!
If you increase your “time-frame” of viewing, you’ll see threads, it’ll just be like going back in time to Sunday morning.
Our apologies for the loss, it’s one of the unspoken risks here. Databases can lose information.
    SC ”

Who is our? Who is we?

I hope that WD is not River hiding behind a screen name cause if he is a licensed psychologist that might be considered fraud. A consumer always has the right to know the full name of the therapist and their credentials not a fake one. If Heid is Chelonia and site coordinator especially after she banned someone for pointing out that there are more than one site coordinators this would really discredit her.

    #79603
  16. Bevdee

I also noticed that the plug for the book River Smith wrote was pulled.

It’s odd what disappears at that site. Very telling! The incriminationg threads where we were banned, now the alleged qualifications of the site developers. Now the link to buy the little book River Smith wrote, listing him as a developer or co-founder of the site is gone!! I think it substantiates Paul’s claims, too. I think it speaks of fear and guilt.

    #79598
  17. FraudBuster

I noticed that AAC was recently reconstructed. I did read the public post to WD in regards to submitting info about DV. I have also noticed that WD has a history of posting about the guidelines on AAC. Since everyone on AAC is allegedly annonymous then how did the SC know WD qualifications or that their arent other people who may be more qualified? The whole situation sounds more than fishy to me. Chelonia is always the one who consistently does dontation drives and meets and greets newcomers. Another suspicious character. The fact AAC revamped everything is a sure sign of substantiating Pauls allegations.

    #79537
  18. Bevdee

Have y’all noticed that AAC pulled their site developer bios in the “about us” section? The ones with all the alleged credentials, so-called qualifications and resumes? With their NAMES? BUT!!! Not the new masculinity, or the domestic violence stats, which “site coordinator” cordially invited Worried_Dad to do. Very interesting.

Trying to hide the evidence? :Q

Just another example of how man-bashing has become so ubiquitous as to be considered normal and acceptable.

“Feminist therapy.” The term makes my skin crawl … .

  20. FraudBuster

DeeAnna you are correct the best course of action is to submit a complaint and let Ohio psychologist licensing board do an investigation and make a decision.

I hope that people visit the Allaboutcounseling.com website and if they do feel free to offer an opinon.

    #76148
  21. @ DeeAnna Merz Nagel

    Thanks for you comments.

One thing that is pretty clear regarding this particular site: Ohio is a mandatory reporting state. According to my information, licensed professionals are compelled to report all forms of abuse and threats of abuse of which they are aware regardless of the presence or absence of a therapeutic relationship.

As I said in the article much of the other information needs to be evaluated by state officials because there are some unclear areas regarding online conduct.

It appears that more clarification is needed in the Ohio code. As it stands now, in Ohio and apparently other states the ambiguity in statutes makes it too easy for unscrupulous individuals to dance in and out of the gray areas, affording them abundant opportunity to victimized people with impunity.

As to the agreement? For allaboutcounseling.com, there isn’t one. No disclaimer, no definitions, no nothing. Just an invitation by counseling professionals to obtain support for solving life problems with the promise of safety and confidentiality.

    #76147
  22. It also depends on what the agreement says…and without knowing the details of this site, the intentions, the terms of use, etc I would not want to speculate whether this particular site has breached ethical codes. And the legal end is best left up to formal proceedings. My comments are made in summary and in general. I am not at all suggesting that professionals can not or should not provide self-help information or help people achieve peer support with one another. I am suggesting that in doing so, certain ethical and legal responsibilities may ensue.

    #76144
  23. FraudBuster

DeeAnna Merz Nagel- Thank you for answering the question “When does the therapeutic relationship begin”.

After one decides to create a nick name so they can log in to AAC they must push a button agreeing to to accept the guidelines. In my opinion this is a written agreement. After that it is reasonable for anyone to expect that the guiidelines will be upheld. But, they are not, the Site Coordinator logs on and uses abusive, foul language as well as publicaly condemning, yelling at and judging others, etc. The site administrators violate their own policy.

I totally agree with you about anyone who gave the site money had officially entered into a therapeutic relationship.

    #76142
  24. Thank you for bringing this very important topic to light. I have been training therapists for years regarding the ethical practice of online counseling. And while sites like the one you mention are not necessarily providing online counseling, the professional whose credentials are associated with the support offered to consumers does have certain ethical responsibilities in my opinion. Maintaining confidentiality via encrypted websites and practicing due diligence with concerns that may arise on any forum, discussion boards, chat room or other communication delivery method that the professional is hosting is very important.

The question often becomes, “When does the therapeutic relationship begin?” Most clinicians seem to think that the formal written agreement and informed consent is what begins this therapeutic process but if there is any expectation on the part of the consumer that a site is hosted or facilitated by a licensed professional will offer any palliative cure, then the clinician may be considered to have entered into a therapeutic relationship, particularly if money transactions have taken place.

    #76139
  25. I need to add to this post some public thanks to some very private people. There were three different people who were of invaluable help in gathering information and fact checking this story, as well as providing intelligence that otherwise would not have been available.

To FraudBuster and the others, a thousand thanks and much appreciation.
