This is a very fitting post for Veteran's Day. The Aleutian Island campaign of the Japaneese was a very serious threat to mainland U.S.A. and they very much had designs on the Pacific Northwest. For some reason I think that Americans don't like to admit that we have been invaded since 1812 and that is a real shame when you think about all that those men faught and died for.
I have only seen one documentary on this subject and to my knowledge not one book has been writen about the subject exclusively. It only gets mentioned in footnotes from time to time.
I have never been in the military and as such have never seen combat before. But on days like today I think about what it must be like, as all Americans should. On this paticular veterans day I will think about what it must be like to march, bivy and fight in biter cold on a very isolated island in the Norther Pacific.
