Newsweek Writers Serve Round One of Male (Studies) Bashing

2010-04-08
By

Almost immediate journalistic critique has emerged regarding the Conference on Male Studies at Wagner College.

It comes from a the Equality Myth Blog by Jessica Bennett and Jesse Ellison. The two authors answer the question of who they are with the revelatory proclamation that they are: 1. Newsweek writers- 2. Pop culture enthusiasts- and 3. Feminists.

My, it’s the quintessential trifecta of inane liberalism, a.k.a. mainstream media credentials. It’s hard to imagine how the two Jess’s  (oh gawd, how cute is that?) covered an academic event, populated with a team of scholarly luminaries, all by their selves.

Well, they actually did have some assistance. For expert analysis, the duo secured the opinion of the cabbie who dropped them at the conference. She expounded on the concept of male studies with an incisive cackle, and punctuated her expertise by throwing back her head as she laughed.

The rest of their piece, should you decide to invest the thirty seconds it will take to read it, pretty much just repeats the sentiments of the cab driver, only less articulately.

I must say, in fairness to the twins, that the cabbie left me with little to say as well.

At first I was cautiously encouraged to hear that representatives of Newsweek were in attendance at the conference. I expected them to get it wrong, but at least to demonstrate that they had some understanding of what was happening. I beg your forgiveness for my naiveté.

In my infernally interfering tendency to hope for the best, I just didn’t expect that the publication would be represented by two air heads whose next story will likely be on the significance of Lady Gaga in the fourth wave.

I mean, what else can we do but awe at the cultural acumen of those who cover such Pulitzeresque topics as “Love in the Digital Age,” and “Because Dancing is a Contact Sport,” where one of the generic Jess’s boldly exposes the brutish presence of football players competing on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Thanks to one Jess or another, the Foxtrot is once again safe for women, with the caveat that the remaining dance partners are still, ahem, male.

Sorry, On Step Institute, the gig is up. Newsweek’s postmodern version of Woodward and Berstein is on you like Pink’s spandex. There is nowhere to hide, not from the twins; not from their lame quips, and not from their dangerously pointy little heads.

Stupid is as stupid blogs. And with an article titled Misandy, Male Studies, Staten Island, Good God, Wow- stupid blogged in fine and predictable fashion.

Perhaps they will powder up together (whatever that means to these two), and go on the prowl again in October at the International Conference on Male Studies.

I can’t wait for their follow up article. I am sure the title will again display the distinctive flair of their trademark un-snappy punditry. Let’s see here. Male Studies, Eww, Icky!

You can bet it will be something to that effect. It’s what happens when you put small minds on a big event, and especially if you want to remain insulated from taking an actual position that you have to defend with something other than satire.

And this is likely not the last we will see of this kind of non-coverage coverage.

COSMO had their rep there as well.

    WOW.

    Sort of like being married:

Rule #1: SHE is ALWAYS right.
Rule #2: If SHE is wrong refer back to rule #1

These chicks are like ants at a picnic…..

This, I believe, is when we in the Mens Movement should begin to take note of the editorial stance of each mainstream media outlet. We should keep track of “signifiers” of their ideological leaning, and in cases such as this where they outright MOCK the idea of equality, we should not only keep record, but put the record of their own actions in their faces as much as possible.

The mainstream media needs to be MOCKED right back, as this piece does. We need to point out their misandry, their sheer refusal to do something so basic to the “news” media as to report the facts.

We need to rub their man hatred in their faces, and make it cost them money and reputation.

LOTS of money. And SEVERE damage to their reputations.

Of most importance though, is to name and shame each and every individual who spreads this hateful bile…publicly, and TIE THEIR EMPLOYER TO THEIR HATE.

The columnists don’t hate men, they don’t take an anti-male biased stance…

    NEWSWEEK DOES.

So, I suggest we start to hold their feet to the fire.

    Loudly.

I subscribed to “Noise”week for decades until about 3 years ago when their liberal, especially gender, bias seemed to be in my face on every page.

I’d saved up about 100 of their prepaid renewal envelopes over the years and dropped them all in a mail box.

Their days as a viable news source are numbered.

Gender bias and AGW hysteria (what, exactly, does that word derive from?) has increasingly infected National Geographic as well. I’m letting my subscription lapse.

As I stated before, Paul Weaver’s book: News and the Culture of Lying, asserts that journalist are sycophants to their ideological allies. Quote from a review.
“The title refers to the author’s belief that most news reports are too submissive to governmental, corporate, and other official sources. In addition, the author finds news reporters too innocent of how their work is manipulated by crafty public communication efforts or within news organizations. Weaver (Hoover Institution and a veteran journalist, political scientist, and public relations executive) is sympathetic to the professional challenges that news reporters face and avoids a highly negative tone. He provides a concluding chapter of constructive changes to help journalists better serve the public interest. ”
PS, Keep up the good work on your site.

AGW = anthropogenic (man-made) global warming

Typical propaganda attack, shout down your opponent and attempt to dominate the dialog. Feminist drivel simply reeks of logical fallacy. An actual intellectual discussion of men’s rights simply cannot be tolerated.

    Equal rights my ass . . .

    Paul;

I read the blog entry and didn’t think it was so bad. I’m not familiar with the writers, but expect they were just staying in character. Otherwise, they seemed to summarize at a high level. I hope promoters of Male Studies have skin that’s thick enough to get through things like this.

  • Ray

In my opinion, there was a distinct air of impertinence in the tone of their writing, sounding as if they were above the subject matter and men in general.

No doubt other men are sick of the patronizing tone of Newsweek’s writing staff and their incessant male bashing. Hopefully, many men will take their patronage to more professional magazine efforts. Readers can’t do worse than Newsweek if they are seeking intelligent unbiased reading about gender issues, in my opinion.

As far as the thickness of my skin, I hope it gets thinner, a lot thinner. Having seen men told to “get tough or die,” then seeing many do both, is not my idea of acceptable male role conditioning so I’m not the least bit interested in getting a tougher, or thicker, skin. “Get a thicker skin” is just bad advice to give any American man, given the disposable status American society heaps on all men to the detriment of their lives, in my opinion.

I just attempted to access the equalitymyth.com site to read the article, but my company’s net nanny denied access. The reason given:

    “Potentially Damaging Content
Sites likely to contain little or no useful content, with potentially harmful elements.”

Even my company’s net nanny realizes that feminist writers are not only useless, they are potentially damaging.

consider for a moment, just who reads Newsweek, and what, if any impact it may or may not have on the Male Studies program.

Do the people you need to reach read it ? Probably not.

go beyond Newsweek, a publication in serious decline.

  • SingleDad

And here is Salon’s contribution, damn, I thought we covered this when we changed our name from womens studies to gender studies. And catch her reference to violence at the end of her blog:

The letters are more of the same.

    @ Roger

I can’t say I saw the piece the same way you did. But as to “thick skin” I have to really disagree.

Thick skin can be interpreted and applied in a variety of ways. I am sure with the nature of your writing that you have thick skin in abundance. I know I do as well.

But I don’t want to apply that to this, because thick skin is also a mandate for men to keep their mouths shut and just take it. I know you were not suggesting that so don’t take me wrong. But I want to always err on the side of speaking up.

Where misandry is concerned, I want my skin thin and full of nerve endings. I totally agree with Ray.

    @ Patrick

Newsweek readers are exactly who I want to reach. Angry people tend to talk about the sources of their anger, which is what the blog in question is, after all, about.

I don’t think there is a lot of benefit in just preaching to the choir, and conservative blogs are nearly as much of the problem as liberal ones. So I speak to them too, and in the same voice.

Also, every one. The Washington City Paper has weighed in as well on this one. Amanda Hess is cooking up shame sandwiches for any man who dares assert that his problems need to be taken in to account.

Wow, it appears Amanda Hess over at the Washington City Paper has really been taken aback at the idea of male studies. She has now taken her battle of satire to twitter.

After you posted the Amanda Hess link at the Washington City Paper, I took a look at it and her past stories. She seems to be a pot blaming the kettle.

If there is enough cohesion in this movement. A select group of reps should be posting comments on these blogs. Anger and personal attacks only should have a place when we are highlighting their use of them. Otherwise you guys will be mischacterised and mocked in larger publications.

  • Ohone

Im serious, they have have all those inane media outlets and leigions of inane followers to reblog and spread quotes, they can also make dummy accounts and leave any comment they want to misrepresent us.

    Thanks a good idea ohone.

We should look at trying to orgainize groups of MRAs to handle specific website blogs to counteract the half-truths and outright lies.

    HOLD STEADY MEN!

This is just the beginning formation of the ideological and intellectual core infrastructure to establishing the rights of men, boys fathers and husbands. It is in fact the beginning of the establishment and representation of males as a separate socio-political class.

As women have intended and stated it is now apparent that “the personal is political” and indeed it now is. From the policies and actions of women it is clear to me and many others that we must form ranks and engage women politically, socially and economically if we are to compete and negotiate with them for our common and disparate interests.

Thanks, BWT that wasnt intended to in anyway detract from the great job of defending the position and highlighting the misandrist mindset of those “journalists”. Its interesting how their media became a medium for our equality message..
