Global Warming Scam: 2010 is Not the Hottest Year

2010-07-17
By

Warmers and Democrats are once again getting overheated by their own propaganda; claiming 2010 is the hottest year on record. The current Cap-n-Trade promotional reads something like this (from The Hill blogs):

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported Thursday that the January-June period was the warmest worldwide on record, based on average land and ocean temperatures.

The NOAA data, which is based on records dating to 1880, ….

From NOAA’s webpage:

NOAA: June, April to June, and Year-to-Date Global Temperatures are Warmest on Record

The monthly analysis from NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center, which is based on records going back to 1880, is part of the suite of climate services NOAA provides government, business and community leaders so they can make informed decisions.

If you’d like to see a graph, click here.

According to Marc Morano at Climate Depot, the 10th of a degree difference they’re talking about is the result of cherry-picking data.

Besides – this is summer, and what they’re talking about is weather, not climate change.

But aside from the normally expected counter-analysis to warmist claims from those who are actually scientifically competent, there is a particular phrase in the new promo that immediately catches my attention – on record.

What record?

Even the most recent fake British inquiry into the behavior of scientists at East Anglia had to admit that their data was “misleading.” Now one needs merely to take notice of the copy-paste arguments of rank and file warmers. NOAA has routinely presented results corresponding to those of East Anglia.

One of the most important facts discovered in relation to Climategate was that East Anglia’s Phil Jones went to great effort to falsify temperature records throughout the world, asking its caretakers to replace their data with his fake data and for permission to present his fake data as original data from them. The United States, NOAA included, was not on the very short list of countries that said no. (And while we’re at it, NASA – i.e. the godfather of the global warming hoax James Hansen at Columbia – is also not on that list.)

The Climategate conspirators have all gone back to work as if nothing happened. Warmers are once again using their products as talking points to promote arbitrary tax increases and government take-overs. Are they really expecting the rest of us to believe any of it? (Keywords: “hockey stick”, “trick”, “hide the decline”)

Warmers are anti-science. Appeal to authority teaches nothing. Science is about why and how. Climate “science” is not real science. Its professors are not qualified or worthy to teach at American universities.

The Difference between ‘True Science’ and ‘Cargo-Cult Science’

In fact, Revkin promoted RealClimate.org; helping to build it to the popular site for journalists to go to looking for “facts” about global warming. After Revkin, journalists around the country were copy-pasting glowing descriptions about RealClimate as the reliable source for climate science. He might have been the original source.

Then we had a long period during which RealClimate responded to “deniers” with name-calling and by changing their argument. (I think it might also be where “global warming” first became “climate change”.) Their commentators were quite dictatorial as well – angrily stating that they’d already responded to this and that as if details weren’t important – only that they’d pronounced “the truth.”

If one really wants to see a great example of making it up as they go; the history of RealClimate.org would be a great place to look for it.

Mixing and dropping proxies (replacing with more recent “data” sets created by East Anglia Climategaters for example) also seems to be part of the “trick”, intentionally designed to “hide the decline.”

Perhaps I’m only reviewing what you just said, but:

It would seem to me that tree-rings and even ice-core samples would be subject to effects of other variables; although I profess no great expertise here. A dry year isn’t necessarily a hot or cold year for example. And by the way – too hot OR too cold stunts growth. Growth v. temp. is not linear. (That I do know.) Even if there is a way to differentiate, I would think it rather challenging to align the relative information you get into just the right absolute positions.

The info that’s come from review of East Anglia, et al.- warmers’ “corrected data” says they just made crap up along the way to support their case. Very selective people, even regarding the equations they built themselves that were able to give the results they wanted even without any data. Believe me – I have seen it before in politically driven “SCIENCE!!!” – emphasizing how they shout about it – one of the proxy indicators used by political corruption investigators like me to quickly identify suspect arguments. It’s an appeal to authority and particularly suspect when “deniers” and “skeptics” and any other potential opponent is labeled and demonized before any debate starts; accompanied of course, by a refusal to engage in debate.

It’s been said that anyone who limited themselves to information from the NY Times would have eventually heard of the Climategate scandal without ever having any idea what it was about, other than it was something the evil half-witted religious right-wing racist deniers were exited about. Revkin has not been merely one of its lead propagandists. He’s an insider playing a key role in the conspiracy. He is to providing general descriptions of the next round of argument / propaganda to the faithful what RealClimate.org is to providing its junk science. Top of the class “environmental journalist.” Aside from climate articles for NY Times, he has his own NY Times climate blogg.

I looked into the Japan instrumental data for a book review I did for Quaternary Science Reviews, I will check the references on that data since you seem interested (this was for the 2006 Oxford text called Global Change through the Quaternary, I will double check the reference as I did ths in 2008). I also made contact with (dendro-chronologist) Stahle at U. Ark. about the limits of tree ring data (esp. detrending). Obviously, my doubts about AGW come from knowledge of clmate history (any honest scientist in the Quaternary field with broad knowledge would admit that the proposition that recent warming is not esp. unusual in Holocene time-scales). The problem with the NOAA take on clmate history is that they often exclude sources (proxies) not resolved to annual time-scales (like radiocarbon- or archaeologically-dated sites). This gives dendro too big a role (as detrending will usually take out most long-term variability, “detrending” is the mathematical function by which tree ring sequences are aligned-CANNOT be avoided!

So what is Revkins problem (sounds like he is wasted at NYT, sounds like he would be more at home working for Völkischer Beobachter)?

  • Roger F. Gay

Now that the Cap-n-Trade vote in the Senate has concluded, there’s little short-term use for the fake alarmist report. However, Revkin at the NY Times is already calling for a coup and the end of democracy following the thumbs down from the Senate. His suggestion: Obama should take immediate emergency dictatorial control of everything and expand the powers of the bureaucracy under his control – i.e. more of what he did via the fake CO2 pollution finding that the EPA used to implement laws not passed by Congress.

  • Roger F. Gay

    Bruce;

National Climate Data Center in North Carolina, which produced the report, also maintains four “World Centers” in the US, Russia, Japan and China. So one would have to be careful about which Japan databases one looked into. I don’t know any Japanese and can’t look into their home-grown stuff.

  • Roger F. Gay

    Jay;

It’s well within our experience to see warmers jumping off cliffs without looking down first; just because someone put up a sign that says “Jump Here”.

So, all we have to do to recognize that you’re right is to ignore everything else (much of which I take it you either aren’t aware of or don’t want to mention) and focus attention on a comment that supports your position. Well, du-uh!

You guys also want to win the scientific argument by running it like a political process – an election based on how many scientists vote your way – so long as you get to decide who’s allowed to vote and have absolute control of interpreting what the votes mean. (Al Gore’s fantasy.)

Warmers lost the debate – many times over. Give it up!

This article is crap, the NOAA link supports the Hill Blogs. All you have to do is read one bullet point down, or pay attention to subheadings. Here is the full subheading for those too lazy to search for it:
    source:(same as above) http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2010/20100715_globalstats.html

    “April – June 2010 and Year-to-Date

    * The combined global land and ocean surface temperature for April-June 2010 was 1.26°F (0.70°C) above the 20th century average—the warmest April-June period on record.
    * For the year-to-date, the global combined land and ocean surface temperature of 57.5°F (14.2°C) was the warmest January-June period. This value is 1.22°F (0.68°C) above the 20th century average.”

    Vincent:

I can’t really make much sense of your comment. Left to guess; it looks like you’re a salesman for some kind of “alternative energy” company that has nothing real to offer and is desperately trying to hook potential investors by lying about climate change. It’s easy to see why desperation has set in. Part of the sales pitch is to claim that consumers will face higher total energy costs without unnecessary and arbitrarily high taxes on energy. Someone stupid enough to believe that probably doesn’t have money to invest. The situation is so desperate that you either need a corrupt government scheme to funnel public cash your way, or perhaps give up on the get-rich-quick scheme. Have you tried fixing horse races?

  • Vincent

Ok Roger and your sidekicks…I never want to hear your EVER complain about the weather/climate…remember it’s all NORMAL!
Nor not a peep from you about the price of petro or not being able to fill up…ever…remember we do not need to invest in other forms of energy.
Boy, this is going to be good.

    Hi Bob,

I’m a scientist, and the problem is that there isn’t any credible supporting evidence that human activity has a significant (in the common sense) impact on climate. It’s not a matter of “admitting” or “denying” some evidence that’s out there for all to see if their eyes would just open. It’s just clear misrepresentation to characterize the claims being made in support of global warming hysteria as “”"”"science”"”"”.

It is a question of “admitting” or “denying” what is established fact. The idea that human activity is steering nature really left us, for the most part, as science developed – taking mankind away from superstitious beliefs; like that our behavior made the gods angry and they punished us with, for example, really bad weather. There is no scientific evidence that would cause a reasonable person in the modern age to change their minds. Such ideas are just superstitious belief. It’s established fact – that’s not what happens. Modern educated intelligent people know that.

As a scientist, I have no problem stating that the IPCC is not a scientific body. It is a political organization that puts out propaganda as naturally as Green Peace or any other organization that maintains itself in that way. But even if you accept the adjusted adjusted IPCC results, there is no cause for alarm, and no need for expensive (and very destructive) political action.

You can thank extreme distortion and exaggeration on the part of environmental journalists, a few dishonest scientists, and a bunch of corrupt politicians for giving you the impression that there is any reason to think otherwise.

  • Bob

First of all, yes, climate change is a natural process. Some natural processes that can impact climate change probably include variations in the rotation of the earth and the position of the tectonic plates. These processes take millions of years. Then there are other natural processes such as volcanic eruptions and asteroid strikes.

These natural processes do not negate that climate change can happen from more unnatural processes. In fact the greenhouse effect, is a natural process. Without the greenhouse effect, we wouldn’t be here. The debate, I believe, is if human are contributing to the greenhouse effect, and what impact that contribution may have.

I think the science on this is fairly sound. That being the case, I am a firm believer in taking action to reduce our impact. Seriously, forget about global warming, does anyone really think that working to reduce co2 emmissions is a bad thing to do?

Anyway, please, if you feel differently, at least recognize that there is supporting evidence for it, even if you don’t agree. I guess what I am saying is, I’m sick of people saying those who believe in the potential for global warming are just in it for political or financial gain. In fact most of the places I find contradictory evidence are highly questionable for their own political or financial gain.

    URDoomed;

Faulty analysis. You have to start by defining and demonstrating the existence of a problem – not by presuming one and demanding we do something about it.

    Bill,

Global warming is real. So is global cooling. Climate change is natural – always has been and always will be. I’m pretty sure Sarah Palin knows it too; although I’m not her spokesman.

  • Bill

Stephen Hawking believes warming is for real, Sarah Palin doesn’t. I’ll go with Hawking.

  • Dan Pangburn

From 2001 through 2009 the atmospheric CO2 increased by 18% of the total increase from 1800 to 2001 while the average global temperature has not increased significantly and the trend of yearly averages through 2009 is down. The El Nino that made early 2010 look a bit warmer than the trend, peaked in March, 2010 and average global temperature is now dropping rapidly.

Research, with latest findings regarding projected temperature trends is reported at http://climaterealists.com/index.php?tid=145&linkbox=true. It presents a rational equation that accurately calculates the average global temperatures since 1895 with a coefficient of determination of 0.87. That means that it explains 87% of the measured temperatures for 114 years and counting. The best that GCMs have done is less than 80%. The equation predicts that the trend of average global temperatures will decline. The above link and sub links, including links to the temperature data reported by the five reporting agencies, track the data back to the published credible sources.

As the atmospheric CO2 continues to increase and the average global temperature does not, perhaps the comments of ill-informed people will subside.

  • URDoomed

You’re all doomed – It doesn’t matter whether you believe it or not – you’re doomed because you don’t get along and if its TRUE you aren’t working together to resolve the most dire problem in the history of civilization. Its like a pack of people in a burning theater “The theater is on fire.” – “No its not. Shut up and watch the damn movie.” “No – its on fire. I see the flames. I smell the smoke.” “No. That’s a kid smoking in the back row. Shut up. You’re ruining my flick.” “No. I sent a guy to the front of the theater. He checked. Its really on fire.” “Look; if you don’t shut up you ain’t getting any when we get home.” “Oh. Ok. Its not on fire.”

Instead, how about facts and a reality check: we – a voracious species – are chewing up resources like mold in an agar dish – and we are about to run out of sufficient resources to keep civilization going. There are already more home in the U.S. alone then our forests can support just for the maintenance, and Asia where half the world lives is embarking on a similar path, vacuuming resources worldwide and driving up commodity prices through the roof. I have a friend who sails to the N. Pole every year. Climate change is real…and whether sunspot or human driven (or both) the droughts, famine and war as we fight for a shrinking resource base is absolutely perfect – it shows Mother Nature won’t tolerate this silly-ass species any longer and when she kicks us down a few notches by wiping out 80% – 99% of our neighbors in under 2 decades (at most), that will be sweet justice indeed. Got sustainable water that doesn’t rely on urban infrastructure? Grow your own food? Can you live without power? No? You’re doomed.

  • http://mensnewsdaily.com/author/rogerfgay/ Roger F. Gay

    Bruce,

Unfortunately, conditions have been such during my lifetime that I don’t feel the emotional shock of these things as I did when I first encountered the large-scale political corruption controlling science. I still feel disappointment over the fact that people remain in controlling positions and the propaganda / pursuit of the agenda continues even after they’ve been caught red-handed and publicly exposed (even if it’s more like a limp). I believe that the behavior will continue until we replace people in higher positions who will correct it.

The first step in “doing something” about a problem is to define the problem. The interference in the process from politics is so great that we’re doing very poorly at this very critical first step. Science & engineering are critical elements of modern civilization. Sufficient corruption will take us the way of Rome (i.e. we’ll fall). If we’re not moving forward, we’re moving backward.

Global Warming : Condemn the IPCC

  • Bruce

Dear Roger, You might check the Japan database, as this has not been influenced so much by political concerns (cf. NIWA in NZ!), also, UHI DIFFERENTIAL through time in Japan is lower due to lower impact of ‘urban sprawl’ in 20th Cent. vis a vis the more extreme American situation (initial high density pop., with much more restrictive building codes than USA-in historical terms makes Japan a more ‘pristine’ instrumental record). Thus the instrumental record in Japan, unlike USA (cf. GISS), points to the 1930′s as being the warmest decade of the 20th Century. This conforms also with Soviet records of Arctic Ice extent pre-WW2 (it would appear, below 2007 levels), as well as the Depression Era Dustbowl experience in the Midwest US (higher temps. coupled with intenisve land-use practice here leads to a well-known and very REAL env. problem).

Two questions remain. First, how much longer will some people at NOAA-GISS get away with this farce? Second, when will that part of the env. movement devoted to AGW ideology wake-up and do the very many real things they can do about REAL env. problems! Everyone has a real positive interest in good science, and not everyone in ‘est.’ Academia or the Federal bureaus is going along with falsification, but most simply lack needed guts to go against a party line. It is more about lack of institutional integrety-a quite common problem today, and scientists, unfortunately, are simply ordinary people.

  • Roger F. Gay

    Larry,

As I understand the current situation, there is no reliable global temperature database. Modern civilization in the west has been keeping records for about 100 years and that record set has now been corrupted.

From that perspective, there is no empirical dataset that can serve as a basis for modern “climate science.”

BTW: Plenty of people get confused re: the use of the term “theory.” For example, what became popularly known as “global warming theory,” “AGW theory,” and later dubbed “climate change theory,” never was a theory. It was only a strange hypothesis that failed.

The term, “conspiracy theory” has been commonly used in a faulty way, to describe wild claims that lack real evidence and credibility. A “conspiracy theory” would actually need to be well supported by concrete fact to qualify as a “theory.” Because of its more established popular use, it is thrown out by people who wish to deny conspiracy even in the face of overwhelming evidence. I know I’d commented on this at least once on another topic, so a little googling and: Fathers Rights? In defense of family and other fundamental rights

Since Republicans have embraced the spending scheme, activist social conservatives praise what they call “bipartisan support for promoting healthy marriages and responsible fatherhood” and downplay the significance of bipartisan support for further government intrusion. Tom Sylvester rejects Stephen Baskerville’s arguments as “conspiracy-theory nonsense.” But anyone can create real conspiracies, even elaborate ones, if they have enough money to pay for them. Intrusive Big Government programs are always accompanied by massive funding schemes. The budget for the child support program, around $4 billion a year, buys a pretty big conspiracy.

Government spending related to promoting the “global warming” agenda has been estimated by some to be much larger than that. But certainly it doesn’t have to be. One billion dollars and the power to manipulate and control people in key places would buy a pretty big conspiracy. Follow the money.

  • http://weisenthal.org Larry Weisenthal

Roger, If I understand your argument clearly, what it comes down to is that you are saying that the data are falsified. To wit: “But aside from the normally expected counter-analysis to warmist claims from those who are actually scientifically competent, there is a particular phrase in the new promo that immediately catches my attention – on record.” You go on to attack not only the credibility of East Anglia but of NASA. It’s all a vast conspiracy theory, is basically what your argument comes down to.

I’m curious — can you direct me to a database in which you have trust? I’d like the opportunity to compare and contrast data credibility. Can you give a link to what you’d consider to be reliable climate data?

Thanks! – Larry Weisenthal/Huntington Beach, CA

  • Bruce

Dear Roger, Your characterization of the Climategate \\\’inquiries\\\’ is accurate, and there are some very serious problems with the representation of climate history records also by US associates of CRU. These affairs were basically designed to protect institutional reputations (like asking Dick Chenney to review US Oil Company safety proceedures, so strong has the conflict of interset here in UK). As to the NOAA report you cite, one problem beyond use of only selective data from possible Urban Heat Island-influenced weather stations is the use of very limited data to produce the graetest ‘anomalies’. There are so many other problems that these get lost in the bigness of the lie. But on this one point, observe for yourself the North Africa psuedo-anomaly, one of the greatest presented by NOAA in first-half 2010 Global terms. This is based on virtually no data (station density is extremely low, and with little data time-depth). This is a typical trick from NOAA, which also has a funding interest (along with GISS) in the AGW scare. That problem (venality issues) works BOTH ways in this debate.

For a second there, I thought you may have intended to comment on my article.

You can easily find articles on all three fake inquiries for East Anglia, including several videos of the social gathering at Westminster (not really sure what building they were in) where they asked Jones if he’s a good scientist acting in normal ways and wrote up his answer as their report. Trying to give them credibility by calling them “independent reviews” is almost laughable. Almost, but not quite. It’s just too stupid for my sense of humor and I rarely laugh at dishonesty anyway. It’s just not funny, especially when intended to aid other criminal behavior. Their actions are intended to cause serious harm to a great many people, and they know it.

Well, there’s lots more to cover, but I can’t do it in one article, and I don’t tutor individuals to bring them up to speed in the comments section. I’d advise you to keep digging and eventually you’ll discover what’s going on, but you might need some help with this first:
