Jan Brown of Harmony, Maine wants your vote.

She’s a volunteer aiming to raise $250,000 in Pepsi sponsorship funds to help the national Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women (DAHMW).

The DAHMW is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization specializing in “assisting & bringing awareness to male victims of abuse.”

The Helpline was established in 2000 as national organization aimed at providing information, hands-on services, and a telephone hotline available to over 5000 victims of domestic violence annually.

For the past 10 years, DAHMW has operated the “Men are victims too” project, where they have offered support to “tens of thousands of men in relationships with abusive partners.”

According to Brown, there are few services available to men suffering under domestic abuse. “Yet,” as she writes on her website, “studies indicate men make up 25% of the reported cases of domestic abuse.”

Brown is a volunteer with DAHMW, and she has launched an ambitious goal: to raise $250,000 in support of their efforts to help men (and women) in abusive relationships.

According to Brown’s website, the goal of the fund raising is to:

  • Educate and empower victims and others with our publications
  • Raise awareness that 1 in 9 men in the US are victims of abuse
  • Provide a lifeline to victims and survivors of domestic abuse
  • Offer concrete help for victims to remove themselves from the abuse

“We have informational booklets, pamphlets, posters and placards for victims and those who work with them,” writes Brown. “However, with an annual budget of less than $15,000 we have been limited in our ability to make these materials available to the public.”

The $250,000 sought by Brown on behalf of DAHMW will be allocated as follows:

$ 150,000 Printing of approx.125,000 posters, booklets, brochures, & placards
$ 50,000 Purchase of 7500 large envelopes and postage
$ 20,000 Stipends for project dir., project coord’s and their assistants
$ 25,000 Funds for victim services/public awareness=more helpline callers
$ 5,000 database programs and misc.office exp.

The Pepsi corporation donates $1,300,000 each month to fund great ideas. To vote for this idea, click here.

Sweet! I sent in my vote. :D

I remember helping out a BlogTV marathon for charity for raising money for rebuilding New Orleans, and the Pepsi CEO came by and donated $50,000. That company rocks! They don’t make soda that I like, per se; but, they deserve a Nobel Peace Prize more than most candidates, especially our current president.

    @ shattered men

you can’t educate the disinterested. my impression is society is wholly disinterested. although I do not like to be pessimistic, I find the 10% tokenism. that amount is divided again. I downloaded their poster, and brochure. I am somewhat interested in their track record, rather than services offered with the caveats attached. As a man I do not want my image sold as a piece of liberal do-gooding for the sake of employing people that marginalize men, while funding more womens services. In Canada the feds are beginning to cut back on womens programs. I suspect this may be a ploy to aquire new revenue streams for women. Sorry I don’t trust them, never will.

@ Keith “It’s disparaging to realize that only 10% of that amount will go to assisting survivors of domestic abuse.”

This may be true but a lot will be used to “educate” the public as to the fact that men are abused as much as are women and that these men have very few resources to go to for help. Shattered Men has no income but we have done a lot with limited resources to educate people on domestic violence. We have had many women join us doubting us who are now solid supporters for what we are doing. Remember, it has been said that the best advertisement is “Word of Mouth”

I think it’s worth a look at the web sight http://dahmw.org/

I have asked for some of their literature, so that I can reproduce it and post it. I would like to put up posters in community centers to see how long they last before being removed.

I believe the existence of male victims is not only ignored but denied and then blamed.

It’s disparaging to realize that only 10% of that amount will go to assisting survivors of domestic abuse.

According to Brown, there are few services available to men suffering under domestic abuse. “Yet,” as she writes on her website, “studies indicate men make up 25% of the reported cases of domestic abuse.”

Interesting statistic. Studies have consistently shown that men are straight out victims roughly a quarter of the time (same as women) and involved in mutual violence about half the time. Making crude assumptions, women are blaming men both when they deserve it and when they’re just as guilty.

    @ Shattered men

Obviously, I responded to the information presented, which was requesting donations for a cause which would almost certainly benefit women (some criminals) more than men. In that situation there is no other logical response.

Of course, with just a simple vote, something is better than nothing, as long as it doesn’t draw resources from what could be meaningful efforts. But, it doesn’t seem “fair” that we have to support more evil to get some good. Still puts them way ahead.

It’s typically amazing, that in rank and dollars, women’s issues, dogs and honey bees are far more of a priority than today’s plight of men.

Have you applied to Pepsi for any men’s issues funding? I plan to look into it.

I am confident that Jan does help abused men but she will not lower herself to the feminist shelter type level and refuse to help women who call for help too.

The 250 K from this site would come from PEPSI but only if national Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women gets enough votes to do so. They are ranked #170 today so they have a long way to go.

    PLEASE VOTE!

You can vote on line or by cell phone and I have been doing both so my vote counts twice.

We know that at least half of domestic violence cases were initiated by the woman. We also know that false domestic violence allegations by the women against men runs rampant. Can Ms Brown convince me that considerably more half of the donated funds would benefit men?

It is quite possible, even probable, that some of the male donated funds would assist the very women who are the cause of men’s troubles.

Even a slight chance of these women getting my assistance is repelling to me. It’s not enough that our tax dollars go towards perpetuating such shrewish behavior?

There is no absolute way that I know of to determine the exact allocation of donations, but I feel more confident putting my, hard to come buy, bucks into a an organization, such as DAHMW, operated by men, for men.

That’s not say that I am not thankful for Ms Brown’s good intentions, but wev’e been treated like fools and fuc*** around for enough decades.

That’s just my way of managing my money.

Right.

Man up.
