DATE: July 26, 2003 AUTHOR: Roger F. Gay roger.f.gay@picslt.org cONTACT: Roger F. Gay roger.f.gay@picslt.org PURPOSE: This change will allow me to update my own article list. DESCRIPTION: Using the new file on your computer will fetch a copy of my article list from my site, and display it, without changing the www address. The www address in the address window of a browser will display the normal address on your site. getHTML.html fetches the contents of the article list from my site and displays in in the web browser display area without changing the address. The operation of this function is efficient and reliable. Access error is handled smoothly. It checks to assure that the file has been fetched. If an error occurs, it falls back on the old copy of the file on your site. (Therefore, I will still update that one from time to time.) However, if this works on your machine, I expect the procedure to be quite reliable. Geocities, where my site is, has rarely had access problems in my experience. Therefore, I will not worry about updating the fall-back copy too often. INSTRUCTIONs: 1. Extract the contents of newThing.zip into the same directory in which my articles file (your copy) now resides. 2. Click on Start.htm and then on the link. (Allows you to test use of browser's back button.) -- If you just get a normal display of my article list, the test was a success. -- If there is an error message at the top of the page or on the whole page then the test failed. Please let me know if this happens. IF THE TEST SUCCEEDED, PROCEED; 3. Rename newThing.htm to RogerFGay1.htm (overwrite). NOTE: If you are currently using a different filename (such as index.html) to display my articles list, then rename (overwrite) to that file. Don't bother backing up the old RogerFGay1.htm. Just overwrite it with the newThing. You have a new version of the old file now that is called RogerFGay0.htm. RogerFGay0.htm also serves as a backup copy in case the copy at my site is unreachable. When I "occassionally" send you an update, it will be to RogerFGay0.htm. THAT'S IT! YOU'RE DONE! BTW: You can fetch an update yourself at any time, by copying it from my site, but I don't expect you to bother with it. What would be the point of this program if you did? My regularly updated version will be at: http://www.geocities.com/rogerfgay/FatherMag/RogerFGay0.htm FUTURE RELEASES: I'm thinking about adding a print/save function to my articles list page. If I do, you'll be able to update your copy simply by clicking on that, and saving to RogerFGay0.htm
