Bon-Macy's Pulls Anti-Boy Shirts as His
Side Listeners Flood Store with Calls, E-Mails
MND NEWSWIRE
SEATTLE, Wa.--Outraged men and women from across the United States
and Canada flooded the manufacturer and seller of anti-boy T-shirts
with angry e-mails and phone calls yesterday, demanding that the shirts,
which say "Boys
are Stupid--Throw Rocks at Them," be removed from distribution.
The furious
campaign began after nationally-syndicated men's and fathers' rights
radio talk show host Glenn Sacks
urged his listeners to protest
the shirts on a recent broadcast.
In pulling the shirts from its stores Bon-Macy's spokeswoman Kristi
Oishi said:
"We believe that the voice of our customers is very important.....while
these products have been in high demand from many Bon-Macy's customers
since they were introduced this fall, we listened to what our customers
have recently shared with us and decided to pull the merchandise from
the floor."
The controversial T-shirts,
which depict a little boy running away as several rocks come flying
at his head, are produced by David
& Goliath, who claim they have sold millions of the shirts and
that it is their bestseller. They told KOMO
TV in Seattle that the T-shirts are merely a "joke," and have not
announced plans to cease production of them.
In his recent broadcast Sacks said:
"As the father of an 11 year-old boy this shirt makes my blood boil....degrading
boys, insulting them, making our schools a hostile environment for them--we’re
not taking it any more."
Jan Brown, the Executive Director of the Domestic
Abuse Helpline for Men, criticized the companies' "cavalier attitude
towards violence against males," noting that the shirts "endorse child
abuse" and tell people that it's "OK to bite, hit, punch, shove, choke,
kick, 'throw rocks' and possibly seriously injure men and boys."
Cooper Cearns, a 4th grade boy interviewed by KOMO
TV, said "It wouldn't be fun having someone walking around wearing
that T-shirt."
