Conspicuous Consumption

This letter to the editor appeared in today’s Chicago Tribune.
I woke up one recent morning after setting my alarm clock (made in Japan) while my coffeepot (made in China) was perking. I shaved with my electric razor (made in Hong Kong) and put on a dress shirt (made in Sri Lanka), designer jeans (made [...]

President Bush referred in speech Thursday to 10 al-Qaida plots foiled by the U.S. and its allies in the past four years. The White House also listed what it call five “casings and infiltrations.”
Meanwhile, for those claiming America has colonial aims, a draft Iraqi constitution is being distributed.

Rove’s lawyer acknowledges he was Time reporter’s source

I’ll admit, I’m not following this story closely. But if it is true that Karl Rove, in an act of political pettiness and revenge, outed a CIA operative which ultimately caused our country harm, Karl Rove has acted in a treasonous manner and should be punished accordingly.
The Newsweek weekly quoted Rove lawyer Robert [...]

Guantanamo Bay detainees play soccer, eat well: US senator

After all the hoopla about the mistreatment of the Gitmo detainees, I’m sure this article will be ignored by the anti-War/anti-America movement.
“And in regards to the health care, my word, they have better health care than many of my small communities in Kansas,” said US Senator Pat Roberts, a conservative Republican from Kansas.

Success!

I have recently been temporarily banned, censored, and/or deleted from Noam Chomsky’s Z-magazine blog. I think. I don’t know which straw broke the camel’s back, so to speak, but I can’t help but feel a bit of pride over the matter. Below is what was written about me. I’m not [...]

Text of President Bush’s Speech

The troops here and across the world are fighting a global war on terror. The war reached our shores on September 11, 2001. The terrorists who attacked us and the terrorists we face murder in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance and despises all dissent.

This nation will not wait to [...]

Remember Scott Ritter?

Do you remember Scott Ritter? He was the former weapons inspector that became Saddam Hussein’s shill leading up to the Iraq war. Hussein paid Ritter to visit his country and then report back to the west that Iraq wasn’t a threat. Ritter then took the fast road to celebrityville by being embraced by everyone in [...]

`Morning-after pill’ not abortion, scientists say
[S]cientists say there is no scientific evidence the pills prevent implantation–and considerable evidence they work mainly by blocking the release of an egg from the woman’s ovary, so no embryo is formed.
“The pervasive myth out there is that emergency contraception is an abortifacient,” said Dr. David Archer, director of clinical [...]

Return to justice as founders saw it

Here’s an excellent piece by Charles Krauthammer on the Constitution and how it has been applied in light of last week’s medical marijuana ruling, and what the real debate should be when deciding who should be a federal judge.
The real question is never what judges decide, but how they decide it. The Scalia-Thomas argument was [...]

Iran will endure U.N. economic sanctions rather than give up nuclear fuel development, the vice president said Wednesday ahead of a new round of meetings with European countries trying to rein in its nuclear program.
Well, it seems we’re about to enter yet another chapter where we’ll see how the serious the rest of the world [...]
