Legal Affairs Council Supports John Roberts as a "Lawyer's Lawyer"
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA -- President Bush nominated a true "lawyer's lawyer" to the Supreme Court tonight, choosing pure legal competence above either politics or political correctness."With the nomination of John Roberts, America has renounced the politicization of the courts and returned to legal competence and intellect as the essence of the Supreme Court," concluded Jonathon Moseley, Executive Director of the Legal Affairs Council. "Wouldn't it be reassuring to have a Supreme Court Justice known for his knowledge of the law rather than for his politics?" Moseley opined.
Judge Roberts graduated Summa Cum Laude from Harvard University in ONLY three years for his bachelor's. Roberts then returned to Harvard Law School, served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review, and earned his law degree with high honors. Judge Roberts clerked for Judge Henry Friendly on the Second Circuit and later for Justice William Rehnquist on the Supreme Court. As an attorney, Roberts argued an amazing 39 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Very few of the 180,000 attorneys who are admitted to the Supreme Court Bar (thus eligible to argue Supreme Court cases) have achieved such a record.
Despite the poltiical pressures to replace retiring Sandra Day O'Connor with another woman jurist, as beneficial as such a choice would have been, President Bush ignored the political dimenstion and clearly chose an outstanding legal mind for his legal capabilities alone.Furthermore, Bush did not select a nominee for his policy preferences, but for his legal mind, overwhelming legal abilities, and comptence. National Journal said that "John Roberts seems a good bet to be the kind of judge we should all want to have -- all of us, that is, who are looking less for congenial ideologues than for professionals committed to the impartial application of the law."
"It is surprisingly refreshing to have a Supreme Court Justice chosen for his legal mind, not for political reasons," said Jonathon Moseley, Executive Director of the Legal Affairs Council. "Americans had almost forgotten what it is like to have a justice chosen because of his credentials as a judge." Judge Roberts is widely respected for his fairness. During Roberts' nomination to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, 152 members of the D.C. Bar wrote to the Senate Judiciary Committee to support Judge Roberts, saying Roberts is "one of the very best and most highly respected appellate lawyers in the nation, with a deserved reputation as a brilliant writer and oral advocate." The diverse group of lawyers signed, ranged from Democratic lawyers like Lloyd Cutler and Seth Waxman to former President George H.W. Bush's White House Counsel C. Boyden Gray. These lawyers emphasized his "unquestioned integrity and fair-mindedness." When he was confirmed to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Roberts earned a favorable vote of 16-3 in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Roberts was then confirmed by the Senate by UNANIMOUS consent.
