Ephemeral Sunshine of the Thoughtless Whine

by Greg Strange

Would it be unseemly or offensive to suggest that fallen soldier Casey Sheehan might be rolling over in his grave right now because of the recent actions and statements of his mother Cindy who has appeared to be in the throes of a media-driven, narcissistic rampage of Bush Derangement Syndrome? If so, then sorry, you don’t have my apologies because the woman has simply gone off the deep end with her radical ranting which is itself offensive to millions of Americans.

Here’s just a cursory sampling of the odious and downright loony things that have emanated from the mouth of this confused woman:

“They’re not waging a war on terror, but a war of terror. The biggest terrorist is George W. Bush.”

“The only reason Bush wants to stay there is because his buddies are getting rich and feasting off the blood of our children.”

“You tell me my son died to spread the cancer of Pax Americana.”

“America has been killing people on this continent since it was started. This country is not worth dying for.”

“We are waging a nuclear war in Iraq right now. That country . . . will be contaminated for practically eternity now.”

“We have to impeach George Bush down to the person who picks up the dog sh_t in Washington! Let George Bush send his two little party animals to die in Iraq.”

And on and on. You get the drift. Of course, the mainstream media, who were loath to be stuck once again during August in a hot, dusty, backward place like Crawford, Texas, were hanging on Cindy’s every word and portraying her as the sympathetic and morally righteous mother of a soldier killed in a questionable war rather than as a Noam Chomsky-style America-hating radical. But it all came out from other sources and it wasn’t exactly indicative of a spotless mind.

Nonetheless, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd -- whom writer Catherine Seipp once described as “probably the ditziest Pulitzer Prize winner ever” -- wrote on the subject that “the moral authority of parents who bury children killed in Iraq is absolute.”

Wait a minute. Whoa! Hold everything, stop the presses! What’s this about an absolute moral authority? Since when? One of the sparkling jewels in the crown of liberalism is that there are no moral absolutes, but that when it comes to morality, everything is relative. It’s one of the main justifications for legal abortion which, instead of simply being pre-parturitionary infanticide, is rather a choice that a woman makes and has only whatever moral significance she cares to give it, which may be none at all.

This “moral authority” line was no doubt typed in one of Dowd’s more non-cutesy, grave and ponderous moments, but it’s as disingenuous as anything she has ever written--and not only for the reason just stated. It’s also because we all understand that in Dowdworld, the only parents whose moral authority is absolute are those who have the same point of view on the war as Dowd herself. We know this because she ain’t writing columns highlighting the absoluteness of the moral authority of pro-war parents who have lost their children.

Look, it’s perfectly obvious that the emotionally distraught Cindy Sheehan has been hijacked by the Michael Moore left with the aim of making her the poster child of a ginned-up, desperately hoped-for antiwar movement a la Viet Nam and that more moderate antiwar types are at least sympathetic with her. But despite the fact that, according to the latest polls, Americans’ enthusiasm for the war in Iraq has grown considerably more tepid than it once was, that doesn’t mean they agree with the ravings of Cindy and her new disciples.

So don’t look for a return to the days when the undisciplined minions of a youthful counterculture ran amok in the streets, indiscriminately consuming mind-altering substances, clashing with the “pigs” and trashing everything their parents ever believed in or fought for. Times have changed, the armed forces are all-volunteer and it’s going to be a lot harder to get college-age kids these days to riot in the streets and burn their draft cards when there is no draft that’s going to put them in harm’s way and they don’t have any draft cards to burn.

Be that as it may, to question or criticize the “moral authority” and the supposed wisdom of Cindy is near unbearable to some of those who hang on her every Bush-hating word. For instance, get a load of the rantings of this outraged blogger on DailyKos.com who just couldn’t bear the actions of a couple of counter-demonstrators at Camp Casey who carried posters that had pictures of Casey with slogans on them that could be construed as pro-Iraq war:

“I really thought no one could stoop so low as to using the pictures of a dead soldier AGAINST his own MOTHER! No shame, no decency, no empathy -- just sheer heartlessness. I’m not normally a violent woman, but when I saw this I wanted to hurt someone -- after I nearly vomited.

“You may want a trash can handy as the need to throw up is not uncommon when you actually see what is printed on the signs. Just posting the pictures makes me feel like I need to take a shower . . . These people are utterly despicable.”

Okay, get those trash cans and showers ready because here’s what the signs said: “SPC Casey Sheehan a fallen hero remembered” and “Freedom isn’t free.” Revolting, isn’t it? When you’re finished heaving, you best go hit the shower.

When it comes to Cindy Sheehan, here‘s the question that people should be asking: Whose moral authority should be given more weight, that of the grief-stricken mother who proclaimed “this country is not worth dying for” or that of her grown son who willingly put his life on the line by volunteering his service to the country that he presumably loved?” I’m betting most Americans will go with the son since most of them dwell somewhere near the sensible center, far from the madding crowd of Moore, Maureen et al.

Casey Sheehan voluntarily reenlisted in the army at the age of 24 while the war in Iraq was ongoing. If he had believed all his mother’s vituperations against Bush, the war and America in general, it’s impossible to believe he would have reenlisted. But he did reenlist. Therefore, he couldn’t possibly have agreed with the things his mother has been saying. Therefore, it is only logical he would be displeased with her recent statements and actions. And thus, my use of the expression “rolling over in his grave.”

When Cindy Sheehan got up on her political soapbox and started throwing around crazy, offensive talk that would make our Islamo-fascist enemies swoon with delight, her moral authority evaporated faster than the morning dew on an August day in Crawford, Texas. If pointing that out is more than some hysterical Cindy groupies can bear, you know what they say about the “heat” and the “kitchen.”

Cindy recently left Camp Casey to be with her sick mother so it’s quite possible that her day in the sun is over. Indications are that most Americans have heard enough and understand that most of her thoughtless whines aren’t emanating from a spotless mind.

Anonymous, what's the matter can't get a job in the Michael Moore camp right now? I love how when confronted by logic liberals choose to just throw insults. I don't imagine that you have ever put your candy ass on the line for anything. Well, just sit back and enjoy the freedoms that are given to you.

Good job, Greg.

Sheeesh!!! What's up with the attacks on Maureen Dowd?

Lately, that is all you so called right wing editoriolist's are and have been doing! Hell bent on smearing Maureen Dowd. Haven't you noticed this "attack Maureen" phenomena?. My god you have her under a microscope. Tearing at Maureen Dowd---the focus from you all is quite the compliment to her really don't you think, worse----- don't you think at all? It is very obvious to me, you "right wing" columnist's are on this woman like flies on a rotting....use your imagination here, cuz she has you ....nervous. Nervous and rightly so.

Hmmm, my guess is she is writing the truth, and that doesn't fit neatly in your numb and vacumm like---- brain holder, nor fit within your primary "tasks/desires" 'list" at hand. Desires get people into trouble. Desires are selfish. GW is acting like Captain Kirk here...."we the people" the rest of us, are paying for this...... peacock in charge. Our soldiers and their famililies certainly are....paying.

She/Maureen Dowd and Cindy Sheehan too....are upsetting your apple carts ---including "himself." The emperor/Bush for he is with out clothes. He can't escape the truth. None of us can when we make mistakes. Life sucks. Truth hurts...deal with it.

What else could/would be the reason Maureen and Cindy have you all; in such a flutter? Repectfully said....your sphincters pinched up and in knots?

Before I go....

I am seriously confused/concerned .....and yeah, very angry.

Recently I read "words spoken" by and from our president/ Captain Kirk: "We're spreading the hope of freedom across the broader Middle East,'' Bush said. "By advancing the cause of liberty in a troubled region, we are bringing security to our own citizens and laying the foundations of peace for our children and grandchildren.''

I see no "peace" taking place at all, across the Broader Middle East...as he deliriously keeps telling us. I honestly see little of the kind. Doesn't this dude in charge watch or read the news? If you do, see "this peace" he/Bush keeps suggesting taking place ...please let me in on that/your little "unseen" secret----- will ya?

Nor do I see him providing peace for our children and grandchildren!! It is our children and our grandchildren---they--- are our soldiers in Iraq! I do believe we have lost about 2,000, children and grandchildren thus far, not to mention other children and grandchildren, wounded and maimed....that count is almost 15,000. Not to mention how many Iraqi children and grandchildren that no longer exist due to this....fiasco this huge and grand scale, MISTAKE.

Our president needs to put his bicycle away and get our children and grandchildren back home ....for peace sake. He is responsible after all, for sending our children and grandchildren to Iraq in the first place. THUS, blood is on his hands. You would think...he would want to clean them----but nothing ever really "harmed" Captain Kirk ...did it?

I don't even know where to begin. I think I should write a column to dissect all the liberal bullshit here. It would'nt be hard because intellectual horsepower is not a skill set that libeals possess. There are so many lies to deconstruct. Liberalism is a mental illness and that pretty much sums up the worthless liberal rants here. I figure since all that you liberals have are your angry insults that you deserved a few in your direction. If this just rattles you more, well good.

Great column.

Many positive developments are happening in Iraq and the Middle East...and so far this country has not been hit again. On these accounts thank Bush.

In the post Impeached President Clinton era, that is, the era of WTC I, Kobar Towers, embassy bombings, and USS Cole attack, there is no guaranteed path forward for a quick fix. The only guaranteed path forward is perseverence and not expecting quick and easy solutions.

I know you liberals think you smell blood. You've been pretty angry and unhappy for so long that you have become desperate for any opportunity to try and validate liberalism and to bring down Bush.

You are sadly losing BIG on both of these accounts. It's great observing the decent of liberalism and the Democrats.

I have so much to smile about these days.

To the patriots I say: "keep the faith brothers and sisters".

To the liberals I say: "eat shit and die...and stay out of the path of my SUV. I don't brake for scum".

Let's see here...more liberal claptrap: War has NEVER ended anything (except Nazism, fascism, communism and slavery). The only good war is a war started by Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Mao, Lenin or Bill Clinton. It's all about the oil/water/Israel/racism/dead babies. Saddam only killed his own people (most of the time), we should have left him alone. Oh yeah, can't forget: Let's give communism another chance (it only killed 100 million or so in the 20th century). Blahblahblahblahblah.

Doesn't anyone remember that this is a free country and that the people that disagree with the war in Iraq, are probably the offspring born right after the 60's revolution. Let them speak, but remember to turn your heads when you laugh at them, for you might hurt their feelings, and they may sue you for your freedom to speak your mind. Oh yeah, Ms Sheehan, the military is a voluntary group of people. Your son's honor is at stake here, SHUT UP!!, and LET'S ROLL>>>>....

Notice that liberals have nothing to say. Personal insults, condescention, and a false sense of importance.

Nothing else. That's it.

It's no wonder that liberals can't win elections.

They are nothing but idiots.

From todays' WSJ (a credible news source unlike say, the "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather"):

"A snapshot of Iraq's security situation:

65, 726 police officers have been trained*

35,678 other Ministry of Interior security personnel have been trained*

176,000 overall Iraqi security forces (police and army) are trained and equipped, up from 138,000 at the time of the Jan. 30 elections.

2,489 Iraqi's were killed between Jan.1, 2005 and June 30, 2005:
275 soldiers, 620 police officers, 1,594 civilians."

These are facts. No angry, hateful liberal rhetoric here. Just the facts.

Here's something for Denis since he likes numbers so much... How does it feel to suck so bad that most Americans think you and your ideals suck on such a large scale? Man, you must be pissed...Bring it on!! The below poll makes me EXTREMELY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. Bush is a terrible president and you wingnut dorks keep supporting him.

Do you approve or disapprove of the way the Bush administration has conducted the war in Iraq? (IF APPROVE/DISAPPROVE, ASK:) Is that strongly or somewhat?

(Results from June 2005 in parentheses)

—Strongly approve, 20 percent (26)

—Somewhat approve, 16 percent (15)

—Somewhat disapprove, 13 percent (11)

—Strongly disapprove, 45 percent (45)

—Not sure, 5 percent (3)

TOTAL APPROVE — 37 percent (41)

TOTAL DISAPPROVE — 58 percent (56)

Clip of President Bush addressing national guardsmen in Idaho]: "Nineteen individuals have served both as guardsmen and as president of the United States, and I'm proud to have been one."
Ah, the first rule of public speaking -- always start with a joke."

"You know if I had nickel for every time Bush has mentioned 9/11, I could raise enough reward money to go after Bin Laden since bush is too chicken shit to do it himself. Bush/Cheney=chickenhawks"

I'm really glad that we have a President with the balls to do what is best for the U.S. and not do foreign policy based on polling numbers like that piece-o-shit Impeached President Bill Clinton did, and who got us in the terrorist mess we are in.

It's called leadership fuckhead. It's called having a backbone-a concept you liberals cannot fathom.

I'm not angry at all (just returning your pathetic insults)-I think you and your fellow liberals are losers. You give me much to laugh about. How could I possibly be angry when I'm having so much fun?

These numbers prove nothing.

My numbers showed actual results.

A common right-wing criticism of Cindy Sheehan is that she doesn't really want to ask Bush a question, she doesn't really want to see him--she's just there to put on a "staged" event, to call attention to her cause, and to get media coverage.

Well, a double-layered "duh" to that. Of course she is there to call attention to her cause and to get media coverage. Oh my god--someone is using symbolism to make a point. What a concept. What will we tell the children?

It's not like Bush has held dozens of staged "meetings" where only supporters were not at risk of being hauled away by the police. But if conservatives really are that literal, I guess it's up to me to set them straight.

I hate to break it to all of you Republicans, but when Pat Peale wore that Band-Aid on her face at your convention, she hadn't cut herself on the barbed wire while she was clearing brush: She was using it as a symbol to mock a man who put his life in danger to fight in Vietnam.

When Bush served a platter of plastic Turkey to the soldiers in Iraq, he wasn't auditioning to be a food stylist for the House and Garden channel: He was promoting good will among those whom he sent to be killed for PNAC and Halliburton.

The Mission Accomplished sign didn't mean that the war was over--just that the White House wanted you to have a big old testosterone charge from all that killing and destruction.

And when Bush stuffed a pair of gym socks into his flight uniform, it didn't mean he was looking to co-star with Adriano Rio--it was just a ploy to create another splash of testosterone.

Getting back to Cindy Sheehan--it is a moot point. Bush will do anything--even leave his ranch for Idaho--to avoid facing her. A vacation from his vacation. That's a lot of vacating. Because it's hard work, being a liar.
