Aid Begins Reaching Quake Victims in Pakistan, India
The first convoys reached Muzaffarabad, the main city in Pakistani Kashmir, and Balakot, in the Northwest Frontier Province, late Monday. The quake flattened both cities and hundreds of thousands of survivors had spent the past two days in the open.
Helicopters are ferrying supplies to remote towns and villages that remain inaccessible by road because of landslides.
Countries around the world are rushing aid to quake victims. The United States is providing up to $50 million in emergency aid as well as military helicopters and cargo planes to help in relief and rescue operations.
Across the border, in Indian Kashmir, authorities are air dropping food and other supplies for quake survivors in remote villages.
India says death toll in its side of Kashmir has risen above 900, and is expected to rise further.
