VAWA Passes Senate
The United States senate has reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act of 1994. The legislation, unpopular among men's groups, was passed by the Senate by Unanimous Consent on October 4, 2005.
Men's Rights Activist Glenn Sacks was heated by the results: "It says a great deal about the balance of power between the genders that a piece of legislation like VAWA--which has so many problems and is in such need of a close examination--could pass the Senate on unanimous consent."
The noted Men's Rights Advocacy group Media Radar had expressed hope that the Senate would include "clear and explicit language" entitling men to the same level of Domestic Violence services as women, and to re-write the legislation to make it less hostile to male victims of domestic violence.

Jane Crow law is the law of the US. Men have been relegated to a distant 2nd class.
Is it sadder that this anti-male legislation got passed again or that men are such milquetoasts to allow this to happen?
Personally? I am ashamed.
I am ashamed of my fellow men. This could have been stopped with a telephone and/or e-mail.
I am ashamed of our legislatures. Not a single one of them have a back bone.
There is absolutely no excuse for such inaction.

No. It could not be stopped with an email or a phone call. There were lots of emails and faxes and phone calls. I am responsible for a number of these. It will take a lot more than that to stop this.
It is not just VAWA. The new bankruptcy law has more referenced to Spousal and Child Support and what not than most anything else. The politics of feminism is very strong right now. The world is going to have to change quite a lot before this changes.
This is horribly inaccurate and very irresponsible writing-
And let me get this straight-did a woman write this?!-
Are you trying to carve out a niche for yourself as a female defender of men that batter,in order to get yourself noticed, because you better believe that your statistics are utterly bogus-40 percent of victims are male, give me a break!
Perhaps if a man had taken YOUR HEAD and slammmed it into a plaster wall and with his knee on YOUR chest, proceeded to slam YOUR already concussed bleeding brain into a wood floor over and over and over again, while YOU lay helpless as a rag doll, fighting unconsciuosness for fear YOU would die if you allowed yourself to succumb, then choked YOU for awhile with first his hands breaking your hyoid bone, then using his tie and then your own belt for what seemed like hours, just getting YOU to the point of blacking out and stopping only so he could start all over again ...And then.... came back for some pummeling of the sides of YOUR already terribly injured head causing rupture of YOUR eardrums and permanent damage to YOUR vestibular system among other things, and then as YOU lay begging for YOUR life told YOU that if YOU dare to go to the hospital or tell anyone he did this, that he will "finish the job" and lets say this man did this all for no other reason than because he felt YOU were "behaving distantly" that evening-when in reality YOU were only trying to extricate YOURSELF from this already abusive relationship...and then... when despite feeling like a beaten down animal YOU somehow summon the courage to report this assault to the police for fear he will kill another WOMAN, it winds up being plea bargained in a rote court practice down from three felonies charged to a coupla misdemeanors with absolutely no prison time,
well perhaps then if all of this happened to YOU, YOU would be writing a different kind of op piece-thats if you could still write-instead of one about how the violence against women act is so useless and biased. 4:29 AM

In response to Makepeace. One can only say that you are sexist pig. You deny the exact same services that you seek yourself, just because the victims are men. Take a look at safe4all.org, and you will find numerous scientific studies that show that there are many male victims of domestic abuse. It's too bad that this issue has become so politicized, when so much good could be done by a nonpolitical approach to domestic violence. Just think, both males and females, abusers and abused could get help, if we could move beyond the politics of domestic abuse.
