Don't blame me, I voted for the Fatah candidate
By Greg Strange
There'll soon be a new bumper sticker adorning cars in the Palestinian territories: Don't blame me, I voted for the Fatah candidate.
So, it's official. The terrorist organization Hamas wins the Palestinian parliamentary elections. Apparently, the voters were in a throw-the-bums-out kind of mood and wanted an alternative to the ruling Fatah Party's corruption and ineffectiveness. Unfortunately for the voters, Hamas isn't likely to lead them down the garden path to peace and prosperity either, seeing as how its all-consuming focus is the destruction of Israel.
It's definitely fuel for pessimists who question the Arab world's readiness and ability to function responsibly in a democratic system. You can almost hear the new antiwar talking points now: If you give them democracy and this is what they do with it, then what are we fighting for in Iraq?
On the other hand, since so many antiwar types are anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian, maybe they'll see the Hamas victory as a good thing. Or maybe it will completely go over their heads. Or maybe . . .
Who the heck knows how their cognitive faculties will perceive and then spin it? The only certainty is that they'll still be against the U.S. effort to spread freedom in the Middle East and on the wrong side of history once again.
Greg Strange provides conservative commentary with plenty of acerbic wit on the people, politics, events and absurdities of our time. See more at his website: http://www.greg-strange.com
