TEEN CHALLENGE DRUG REHAB = SUPERIOR

J. Grant Swank, Jr.

Teen Challenge Centers were begun as a Christian witness to the power of the Holy Spirit to remake a ruined life.

This is at the top: 86.6% of Teen Challenge graduates "after seven years remained drug and crime free. This is opposed to a 67% rate for secular programs."

That is according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse research project and a comparative study conducted by Northwestern University as well as a "comparison of treatment effectiveness in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers" conducted by Aaron Bicknese, PhD of Northwestern University.

Teen Challenge Centers have been Christian-based since founded in 1963 by Pastor David Wilkerson. It is the prayer, Bible and worship foundation that has yielded such phenomenal drug rehabilitation successes. From its beginning, Pastor Wilkerson has relied solely on the Holy Spirit’s ability to cleanse a life, including a drug-infested human being.

"Thousand have come seeking help from Teen Challenge Centers. Significant research projects have confirmed the effectiveness of the Teen Challenge approach to helping those affected by life-controlling problems," states the Teen Challenge Publication, "Research on the Effectiveness of Teen Challenge International." The copy is distributed via Teen Challenge of New England, Inc, Brockton, MA.

Other statistics reported by the researchers include:

72% of the graduates continued their education upon completion of the program.

90% of Teen Challenge graduates were employed one and two years later while 41% were employed after other drug programs.

85.5% of the gradates did not need further drug treatment. (90% considered themselves addicted to drugs upon entering the program).

92% of the graduates report good to excellent health whereas of graduates of secular programs, only 59% claim good health.

"Leaders in Teen Challenge credit the spiritual component of the program as the key to high success rate of Teen Challenge graduates," the publication states.

I recall when Pastor Wilkerson left his comfortable pastorate in a cozy village in order to tackle New York City’s destitute for Christ’s saving grace. As a part of his dynamic ministry, Mr. Wilkerson focused in on drug rehab via the Holy Spirit.

It was a pioneering effort. Yet it was a determined evangelistic rush to bring drug-dependent persons under the hope-power of the risen Christ. Instead of folding, the program has gone worldwide. And it continues to take on the most difficult cases in the name of Jesus.
