It was at the crusade. Dr. Billy Graham was lauded by former president Bill Clinton. Clinton was somewhat wooden in his delivery of complimentary remarks regarding the famed evangelist. Nevertheless, Clinton did come through with kind words for Dr. Graham.
In response Dr. Graham stated that the former president should “become an evangelist and allow ‘his wife to run the country,’” reports Rachel Zoll, Associated Press Religion WriterSun.
That had to be jest.
Dr. Graham simply could not have been totally gospel, biblical, evangelical, wise sage serious. Not at all. Nevertheless, he said it. I wish to God that he had not said it. Nevertheless, when you are 86 years old and Clinton is standing at your elbow a few words of over laudatory accent may slip through the lips.
However, hopefully the real impact of the moment was not Clinton nor Dr. Graham but the good news that salvation is to be found in Jesus Christ.
Obviously those gathered in the 90+ degree heat caught on as to why they were gathered this past weekend. It was to learn more about Jesus, worship Him, and surrender their futures to His saving grace and mercy. Once again, people responded immediately to Dr. Graham’s “altar call” at the close of the messages.
“Organizers estimated 80,000 people had come to the crusade at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens — about 20,000 more than the opening night Friday.
“The evangelist is suffering from fluid on the brain, prostate cancer and Parkinson's disease. He uses the walker due to a pelvic fracture and is largely confined to his home in Montreat, N.C. He had said previously that the rally ‘will be the last in America, I'm sure.’"
