The "United Through Reading" program seems like a very male-positive program (or should I say "parent-positive"). It involves helping military parents stay connected to their children by allowing the parents to read to them. The program seems to have the support of some large corporate sponsors. I first read about the program on a Keebler cookie package.

I like the program because it stresses that males (and females) are human beings who love others and are loved. It also acknowledges the importance of having both parents involved in a child's life.

In my opinion, the program is pro-male, pro-father, pro-female, and pro-mother. Let's just cross our fingers that all the soldiers stay alive not only for their own sakes but also for their children. Losing a parent is a major tragedy for children.

It is my hope that programs like "United Through Reading" represent both a cause and a consequence of a changing societal climate that is more welcoming to fathers and males. Maybe someday shared parenting will even be viewed as a common sense arrangement.
