Let’s play Whack-a-Man
Here's a piece of off-the-shelf misandry by Connie Schultz in The Cleveland Plain Dealer (The Plain Dealer, 1/6/09). For those of you who don't know, she's the wife of Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown.
It's a perky little piece about how advanced and willing to embrace change women are, and how loutish and stuck in the past men are. It's so refreshing! We see so little of that.
It seems she pulled into a quick oil change shop and all the employees were women. Oh, they'd had male employees before, but you know men, they were just too messy. Women handle the job so much better. That's why the vast majority of car-repair places are run by women. (No wait, strike that.)
And of course it happens frequently that a man pulls into the shop, sees that all the help is female and drives away "in a huff." See? Men - they're slobs and can't handle seeing women doing a "man's" job. No wonder they can't adjust to our brave new world.
Next week Schultz will run a piece about the male cook or dishwasher at her corner restaurant and marvel at how capable he is of doing "women's work." Or maybe not.
