Journalism 101

What's one of the first rules you learn in Journalism School?  Get both sides of the story, right?

Now of course you can't always do that.  Sometimes there aren't two sides.  Sometimes one side can't be contacted or won't talk to you.  When that happens you say "Jane Doe didn't return reporter' calls and emails," or words to that effect.

But in a divorce case there are two sides and they often don't agree with each other's version of the facts.  So you talk to both sides unless one side refuses.

Or not as in the case of this article about Gossip Girl Kelly Rutherford's pending divorce from Daniel Giersch whose reporter apparently made no effort to pick up the telephone and talk to Giersch or his attorney (eonline, 1/20/09).  It's all Rutherford's point of view.  The husband and father are shoved out of the picture.

Funny, that accurately reflects what happens so often in family court and after divorce.  Hmm...
