1902: Father Leaves Estate to Kidnapped Child

Oakland, Cal. – Carroll Huntey, a prominent resident of Louisville, Ky., was killed in a train wreck while travelling in Missouri recently. When his will was opened it was found that he had left all his property, valued at many thousands of dollars, to his daughter, who was taken away by her mother when she was 2 years of age. It was provided in the will that the search for the daughter should be continued as long as there was any money in the estate or until she was found.
J. O. Hobbe of San Francisco is searching the records of this county to find there is some possible trace of the widow. According to his story, the Hunteys were married in Louisville about thirteen years ago. He was a prominent young businessman and she was a society belle. For three years they lived happily. One day about ten years ago, while she was traveling from Louisville to Chicago with her 3-year-old child, Mrs. Huntey met a commercial traveler named Brooks. When their journey ended Brooks persuaded Mrs. Huntey to leave her husband and accompany him. She took her baby along.
The couple came west and for years Huntey heard nothing from his missing wife and child, although he expended large sums of money in endeavoring to find them. After a short time Brooks deserted the woman.
Mrs. Huntey would not write to her husband for assistance. She found employment, and thus supported herself and child. Four years ago, while in the city, she was taken ill and wrote to a friend in Louisville, informing her of her distress. She stated in the letter that she had been having a hard time earning a livelihood.
Since Huntey’s death this letter was produced, and it is by this means that efforts are now being made to find Mrs. Huntey and her daughter, who is now 12 years of age. Mrs. Huntey is described as about 35 years of age, tall and having dark hair and eyes. Hobbe is representing a firm of lawyers in Chicago which is searching for the mother and daughter.
