Canadian Woman wants $38.5 Million/Year from Keanu Reeves for Alimony and Child Support
Here's one to follow (Toronto Star, 7/6/09). It seems a Canadian woman named Karen Sala is claiming that "at least one" of her now-grown children was fathered by Keanu Reeves. Her offspring are now in their 20s and Sala is suing Reeves for spousal support and child support. As to the money, she's not beating around the bush; she wants $3 million per month (that's right, per month) in spousal support, beginning in 2006 and $150,000 per month in child support going back to 1988. Sala filed suit in Ontario family court to try to force Reeves to give a DNA sample for paternity testing.
Reeves, for his part, says he has no idea who this woman is, and has never had sex with her.
Interestingly, the Star article says that Sala claims she had a continuing sexual relationship with the Hollywood star "before, during and after her troubled marriage." That means she was married and now she's divorced.
Now, when there's a divorce, there are usually findings of fact by the judge establishing the parentage of the children. Usually, that's boilerplate language to the effect that the children named in the divorce case are the natural children of the parents and no other children are expected at the time the divorce decree is signed. Of course, if the children have different parents, that's established factually too.
So it would be interesting to know what Sala's divorce decree says about who the father of her children is. In some jurisdictions, the recital in the divorce decree that the divorcing husband is the father of the children is res judicata as to him, and maybe to her too. That means it's a judicially established fact and can't be challenged by him and, as I said, possibly by her as well. Whatever the law is on that in Ontario, I'd sure like to know what Sala told the family court in her divorce from her husband and whether she received child support and/or alimony from him.
This is one to keep tabs on. Anyone care to bet she's telling the truth? Not me.
