Any Evidence for Sacramento Bee’s Claim that Economic Abuse is ‘On the Rise’?

By Robert Franklin, Esq.

Now that we've broached the subject of "economic abuse," I might as well add that one of the original articles on the subject claimed that the phenomenon is "on the rise."  I sent the writer of that piece, Anita Creamer, an email asking for her evidence for her claim and, to date, she hasn't responded.  I also called her, but she hasn't returned the call.

I also asked the Allstate Foundation for any data they were aware of on the incidence of economic abuse.  Allstate is the organization that commissioned the study of the public's awareness of the phenomenon.  Unlike Creamer, Allstate did reply thus,

We don’t have access to any studies about how often economic abuse occurs.  The reason being that it would be very difficult to track and that most people don’t know what it is or that it is happening to them.

That strongly suggests that there are no such studies because the phenomenon hasn't been tracked.  Still less are there studies that indicate an increase in economic abuse over time.  And that further suggests that the Creamer - ahem - got creative with the claim that economic abuse is "on the rise."

I could be wrong, and I hope Creamer gets back to me with evidence for what she said, but my antennae tell me she won't.
