Members of Maine’s Army National Guard will be coming home for the holidays courtesy of one of the state’s most famous residents.

According to the Pentagon, best-selling author and screenwriter Stephen King is paying for members of his home state’s ANG to come home and enjoy the Christmas holiday with their families.

King wanted his gift to Maine’s bravest to remain anonymous, but eventually the story leaked out and the Pentagon decided “the horse is already out of the barn.”

Considered the master of the Horror, Fantasy and Science Fiction genres, more than 350 million copies of King’s novels and short story collections have been sold, and many of his stories have been adapted for film, television, and other media. The motion picture adaptation of his thriller “The Shining” (Jack Nicholson) is arguably the greatest horror motion picture ever produced.

Kings other works include “Carrie,” “The Stand,” “Salem’s Lot,” “Shawnshank Redemption” (a novella), “The Green Mile,” and many, many others.

Since becoming commercially successful, King and his wife have donated large amounts of money to causes around their home state of Maine and elsewhere.
