Amy Alkon on MND / Tragedy Or Jihad? - Hal - According to Hasan's cousin, he had been "picked on," harassed by other soldiers because he was of "Middle Eastern origin." Brilliant. You feel "picked on" by people who say yours is a religion of death, so you kill them.
Amy Alkon on MND / Welcome To The Doctor Shortage - Redrajesh - Education should be made free so that people do not have to pay through their nose for it. Just have a small number of available seats so that only good quality people get it. Or even better, just remove college. in most cases, college education is useless - the only thing it does is provide employment to profs...so hiring should be done right out of school. After all, people pick up everything at work and forget everything that is taught in college.
Amy Alkon on MND / Organ Transplant Regulations Are Killing People - Dave Undis - As the death toll from the organ shortage mounts, public opinion will eventually support an organ market. Changes in public policy will then follow. In the mean time, there is an already-legal way to put a big dent in the organ shortage -- allocate donated organs first to people who have agreed to donate their own organs when they die. UNOS, which manages the national organ allocation system, has the power to make this simple policy change. No legislative action is required. Americans who want to donate their organs to other registered organ donors don't have to wait for UNOS to act. They can join LifeSharers, a non-profit network of organ donors who agree to offer their organs first to other organ donors when they die. Membership is free at www.lifesharers.org or by calling 1-888-ORGAN88. There is no age limit, parents can enroll their minor children, and no one is excluded due to any pre-existing medical condition. Giving organs first to organ donors will convince more people to register as organ donors. It will also make the organ allocation system fairer. Non-donors should go to the back of the waiting list as long as there is a shortage of organs.
NewsWax / UN Tax on Americans Supported by Obama, Democrat Party - Lucy - God what a terrible thing - taking responsbility for the inequalities in the world that lead to extreme poverty, starvation, misery and early deaths of millions of human beings while others live surrounded by excess material goods. I'm sure we can all spare a few dollars each to end the scourge of poverty. How can it be suggested that the third world is not already enslaved to the needs of the first world? What a ridiculous point of view.
Amy Alkon on MND / Incoherent Reader Rant Of The Week - Chris - Oh, I would say something to you in public. To be honest, there likely isnt a venue that would crack your stucco facade of sarcastic faux intellectualism, but if there was to be a crumble, it would be one deliciously chipped off in public, not in an email like that one.
NewsWax / Obama Administration, Pentagon Prepare for Homeland Deployment - Joe - Our Goverment can not get anything right let alone interfering with US citizen rights and Our Constution! This is a big big mistake we have to fight this or we'll all be in big trouble. Goverment needs to stay out of our lifes . We are the ones that should deside if this is what we want not our President and his Cabinet.
NewsWax / "Deadbeat Dads" in the Crosshairs of IRS - Gloria - My child has not received child support for almost 2 years. Of course when the state without my knowledge doubled the child support amount, I stopped receiving child support. The state doubled the child support without my knowledge, consent, or petition in family court; so, they could grab about $10,000. in child support in about a six month period. What most Americans don't know is that the county child support enforcement and collection units and the same state units are collecting the monies for themselves at an alarming rate, even if that rash and what I believe to be illegal activity breaks the back of the paying parent and in the process leaves the custodial parent and child/children in a more devastating place.
Amy Alkon on MND / How The Republicans Can Get Their Groove Back - Virtue - Gotta Disagree Chris, The problem with pandering to a religious group is that we have a complete seperation of church and state for a reason. For instance, any group we pander to will expect something in return for their support that is beneficial to them. So is it ok to take official government action that benefits a religious organization?....Like the Church of Latter day saints? Or Scientology? Or an Islamic church?
Amy Alkon on MND / How The Republicans Can Get Their Groove Back - Chris - What difference does pandering to religious people make? If the issues are not in conflict with your "more enlightened" thinking....who cares? Its telling that those throwing "nutter balls" about religion are those who are NOT religious...unprovoked, as if the mere existence of a faith is chiggers under your snide intellectual skin. Get over yourself.
Amy Alkon on MND / Why More Women Aren't Bloggers - Chris - This is why, on themed message boards, its nearly impossible to get traction on a topic that involves gender. The stereotypical generalized modes of communication pop up, and frankly "da men cant hang yo"
Amy Alkon on MND / The Real Cost Of Health Care In France - Thinkcap - I guess at the extreme one could argue that the French pay no development costs and that the breakup is like this: US consumers pay for development costs, plus production costs plus profit. French consumers pay for production costs plus profit. They obvious fix to that problem is to allow US consumers to purchase their meds in France, forcing the manufacturer to shift some of the development costs to the French. Lack of free trade is what actually cost the US consumer. Why do you think its illegal to buy meds in Canada????
Amy Alkon on MND / The Real Cost Of Health Care In France - Thinkcap - Interesting read. However, I don’t fully agree that we are incurring additional costs to have drug companies make meds for foreign consumption. The companies sell the drugs abroad because they make a profit even if it’s very small. A company would simply not sell the drugs if they were just breaking even, they would be no reason. I assume that once a drug is approved, the cost to make an additional pill is minimal compared to the development costs. So if France fell of the face of the earth and used no more meds, US consumers would not see a decrease in medication costs. If anything it would be a higher cost since the development costs would be amortized over fewer pills consumed.
